For most Android users, Google Play is the simplest alternative to sideloading. If the app is not there, check whether your phone’s manufacturer offers it through a preinstalled app store, or use the service’s web app in Chrome if it provides the features you need. Downloading an APK from a website or email is still sideloading, even when the APK comes from the app’s developer.
What are the best alternatives to sideloading Android apps?
The right choice depends on whether the app is available through a store you already trust, whether its website works well on your phone, and which features you rely on. Use this order to find a route that avoids manually installing an APK:
- Search Google Play for the exact app. If it is listed and available in your region, install it from there.
- Check a store already provided by your phone’s manufacturer. Samsung Galaxy Store is one example on supported Galaxy devices; other makers and regions have different stores and catalogs.
- Look for a capable web app. Open the service in Chrome and install it from the site if Chrome offers that option.
- For a work- or school-managed device, ask IT whether it distributes the service as a managed web app.
Store listings and features vary by app, device, and region. Search for the exact service and compare the features you actually need—such as offline access, notifications, background activity, and device integration—before choosing a web version over a native app.
Can I install Android apps without downloading APKs?
Google Play
For a typical user on a certified Android device, Google Play is the easiest place to start. Search for the app and install its listing. This avoids downloading an APK yourself and granting a browser, file manager, or other source permission to install apps. An app may be unavailable in Play because of its region, device compatibility, or the developer’s distribution choices, so do not assume every Android app is listed there.

Your phone maker’s app store
A manufacturer’s marketplace can offer apps through a store interface and may carry a vendor’s own software or listings not available to you in Play. Samsung Galaxy Store is an example for supported Galaxy devices. Other stores named in Android’s initial developer-verification rollout include HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps.
Which store is installed, accessible, and useful depends on your phone, location, and the store’s catalog. There is an important distinction: installing an app from a marketplace already on your device is different from downloading that marketplace as an APK. If you have to install the store itself from a website or file, that first step may still be sideloading.

Developer verification rollout, as of October 2026
Google’s published guidance says developer registration is enforced beginning in September 2026 for apps downloaded from listed participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The initial list includes Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. Google says the protection will expand globally to apps on certified Android devices in 2027.
This policy verifies developer identity and app registration; it is not a claim that Google reviews every app’s content. Google’s guidance describes a one-time advanced flow for users installing an app from an unverified developer. The help page says AOSP and non-certified devices are exempt. Because enforcement is being introduced by region and store, check the current Android guidance if a particular installation is blocked.

Can I use a website as an Android app instead?
Yes, when the service has a mobile web experience that does what you need. A web app can put an icon on your launcher or home screen without installing a native Android APK. It is often a good fit for account access, messaging, shopping, news, or documents when the site works well on a phone.
Install a web app from Chrome
- Open the service’s website in Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap More, then choose Install and create shortcut.
- Tap Install.
Chrome’s available option can depend on the site. Installing a shortcut does not turn every website into a full native app, and a web app may not work completely without an internet connection. Some supported web apps offer features such as extra storage for offline browsing, notifications, file-system access, or icon badges, but support varies by implementation.

Before switching, check the particular functions you depend on: offline use, notifications, background work, device integration, and account or payment features. A site may be a convenient substitute for everyday access while still lacking a feature you use in its native app.

For work or school fleets, Google documents a managed web-app option distributed through managed Google Play using the Android Management API. An administrator can define the app’s title, start URL, display mode, and optional icon, then distribute it to managed devices. Chrome is required for the documented display mode.

This is an administrator-managed deployment path, not a general method for consumers to install arbitrary third-party apps. If a web service is missing from a managed device, ask the organization’s IT administrator about its approved distribution options.
What does not avoid sideloading?
Downloading an APK from a developer website, email attachment, or other file source and installing it yourself is sideloading. On Android 8.0 and later, permission is granted per source through the Install unknown apps settings page; older Android versions used a broader Unknown sources setting. Google’s developer guidance recommends allowing only one unknown-app installation at a time where that option is available.
A developer’s own website may be a legitimate distribution channel, but it does not make the installation store-based or sideload-free. The same applies if you download an alternative marketplace as an APK: its later catalog may behave like a store, but installing the marketplace that way still uses the unknown-app route.
How much does the installation source matter for security?
Google says Play Protect scans apps from Google Play and other sources. In figures it published for 2025, Google reported scanning more than 350 billion Android apps daily, identifying more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play through real-time scanning, blocking 266 million risky installation attempts, and protecting against 872,000 unique high-risk applications. These are Google’s company-reported figures, not independent or universal measurements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe figures support keeping built-in scanning enabled, but they do not show that every app outside Play is malicious or that every store listing is safe. Prefer a trusted store or the service’s official web app where possible, check that you have the intended developer or service, and treat any request to install an APK from an unfamiliar source with care.
