Opera Beta is discontinued, so it is no longer a current alternative to Opera Developer. Opera ended Beta support on January 14, 2026, and released version 126.0.5750.30 as its final build. Opera Developer continues as a separate, experimental browser; for selected upcoming features in the regular Opera One browser, Opera now points users to Early Bird.
Opera Developer vs Opera Beta at a glance
| Question | Opera Developer | Opera Beta | Early Bird in Opera One |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current status | Still published; Opera announced Developer 136.0.5988.0 on August 12, 2026. This is a dated release example, not a claim that it is the latest version. | Discontinued. Final release: 126.0.5750.30, January 14, 2026. | Opera describes Early Bird as a way to try selected upcoming features within Opera One. |
| Role | A separate early build for active-development ideas. | Historically, a pre-release channel for the next main release, closer to intended ship quality than Developer. | An opt-in mode for selected features, rather than a separate Beta browser channel. |
| Risk and maturity | Can be unstable or crash; experiments may never reach stable. | Was still a testing channel, despite being closer to planned release quality. | Opera describes its features as more stable than Developer features, but still in development. |
| Who it suits | Developers, advanced users, and enthusiasts comfortable with rough edges. | Not a current choice. | Opera One users who want to opt in to selected experiments in their browser. |
Opera announced Beta’s retirement alongside Early Bird’s introduction in its December 2025 announcement. Its January 14, 2026 release note identifies the final Beta version.
What Beta and Developer used to mean
Beta: a preview nearer to release
Historically, Opera Beta previewed the next main Opera release at a stage closer to the quality Opera intended to ship. It was a testing version, not a guarantee that every detail was final.
Developer: earlier work, with more risk
Opera Developer exposed active-development changes earlier. That made it more suitable for people who wanted to try new ideas and could tolerate unfinished behavior. Opera’s 2014 explanation of its release streams described this distinction; it should be read as historical context, not a current channel schedule.

What Opera Developer is like now
Developer remains Opera’s separate browser build for trying in-development features. Opera says it is intended for advanced users, developers, and people who want to test new ideas. Features may change or never reach the stable release, and Opera warns that instability or crashes can occur. That makes Developer a poor fit if you need your browser to behave predictably for everyday work.
Opera announced Developer version 136.0.5988.0 on August 12, 2026, demonstrating that the channel was still being published at that time. See the dated Developer update for that release; it does not establish which version is current today.

Is Early Bird the replacement for Opera Beta?
Early Bird is Opera’s current in-product alternative for selected feature experiments, but it is not simply a renamed Beta channel. Opera describes it as a setting in Opera One where users can choose upcoming features to try ahead of official release. Opera says Early Bird features are more stable than Developer features, while still being in development.
Opera’s Opera One R3 announcement also describes Early Bird as part of the Opera One experience. Choose it if you want to try selected features inside that browser rather than install a separate, more experimental Developer build.

Should you use Opera Developer?
- Choose Developer if testing early browser changes is the point and you accept possible instability, crashes, and features that may not ship.
- Choose Early Bird if you use Opera One and want to opt in to selected upcoming features with the lower risk Opera describes.
- Do not choose Beta as a new channel: Opera ended its support and published its final version in January 2026.
What happened to existing Opera Beta users?
Before the January 14, 2026 cutoff, Opera advised Beta users to sign in to an Opera account, enable Sync, select “Sync everything,” and repeat the process in the destination Opera browser. The announced syncable data included settings, passwords, extensions, bookmarks, and history. Because that deadline has passed, Opera’s announcement does not establish whether this migration path remains available now; check the behavior of your installed browser and account rather than assuming an older Beta installation can still sync.

No. Opera’s 2014 stream explainer gave approximate historical cadences: Beta updates weekly, Developer releases once or twice per week, and major stable releases about every six weeks. Those figures describe Opera’s 2014 process and should not be treated as today’s schedule.
