On a Mac, kernel_task can also rise as part of macOS’s response to CPU temperature. Find out which process is using the CPU before changing settings or buying hardware: a high reading alone does not prove malware or a failing processor.
What “idle” means—and why the process matters
Idle usually means you are not actively using the computer; it does not mean every app and system task has stopped. Apps can continue working in the background, and startup apps may add to that activity. Windows updates and security scans can also use system resources.
CPU usage is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start by identifying the process and checking whether it is a familiar app, an expected scan or update, a system process, or something you do not recognize. Windows Task Manager and macOS Activity Monitor show which processes are active, but the number alone does not identify the cause or establish a universal threshold for “high” idle use.
How to check CPU usage
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, review the CPU column and note the process using the most CPU. Check whether its activity settles or continues.
- Use the Performance tab for an overview of resource use, and the Startup apps tab to review apps configured to start with Windows.
- Before closing a process, consider whether Windows Update, an app, or a security scan is active. Microsoft notes that Defender scans use processor and memory resources.

macOS
- Open Activity Monitor and select CPU.
- Review the process list and the CPU breakdown: System is macOS processes, User covers apps you opened and processes they opened, and Idle is unused CPU capacity.
- Use CPU Usage for current activity or CPU History to see recent activity.

Common causes of high idle CPU usage
Background or startup apps
An app can continue working even when you are not interacting with it. On Windows, review Task Manager’s Processes and Startup apps tabs to identify likely contributors. Disable startup only for apps you do not need to launch automatically; disabling everything indiscriminately can interfere with software you rely on.

Updates and maintenance
Windows or driver updates may coincide with background activity. Check Windows Update before concluding that an unfamiliar spike is a fault. Microsoft recommends keeping Windows and drivers updated because updates can include fixes and performance improvements; that does not mean every update causes sustained high CPU use.
Security scans or other antivirus software
A Windows Defender scan uses processor and memory resources, so a scan may account for activity while you are away. If another antivirus product appears responsible, check whether it is up to date and consult its vendor. Microsoft’s antivirus performance guidance is enterprise-focused, not a diagnosis for every consumer PC; it cautions against casually disabling protection or adding exclusions because doing so can create security risks.

If you suspect malware, run a scan with Windows Security rather than treating CPU usage itself as proof of infection. Microsoft lists malware as one possible source of CPU and disk use and provides guidance for troubleshooting malware detection and removal.
A software conflict on Windows
If the process remains unclear, a clean boot can help determine whether a background app or service is interfering. It starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs; if the symptom disappears, re-enable items methodically to isolate the conflict. Microsoft warns that some functionality may be unavailable during a clean boot and instructs users to restore normal startup afterward. On a networked computer, policy settings may prevent the steps; Microsoft advises using System Configuration for advanced boot options only with its support guidance. Mac thermal management and kernel_task
If kernel_task is prominent in Activity Monitor, it is not automatically the original cause of the problem. Apple says, “One of the functions of kernel_task is to help manage the temperature of your CPU.” It can make CPU less available to intensely active processes when temperature conditions warrant, and its activity decreases as CPU temperature falls. Apple also says, “It does not itself cause those conditions.” Read Apple’s explanation of kernel_task using a large percentage of Mac CPU.
A safe troubleshooting order
- Observe, then identify. Give the reading time to settle; note the process name and whether CPU use remains high. Do not rely on a single momentary spike.
- Check for expected work. Look for an active scan, update, or app task before stopping a process.
- On Windows, review startup apps and updates. Disable only startup apps you do not need, check Windows Update, and run a Windows Security scan if the process or other symptoms raise a malware concern.
- Handle third-party antivirus cautiously. Update it and ask its vendor about high resource use rather than leaving protection off or adding exclusions without a clear reason.
- Use a clean boot only if needed. If unexplained Windows activity persists, follow Microsoft’s isolation steps, test startup apps and services methodically, and restore normal startup afterward.
- On a Mac, interpret the process in context. Compare System and User activity and consider Apple’s temperature explanation if
kernel_taskis high. Seek device-specific support if persistent activity or heat remains unexplained.
When to seek further help
Escalate if high CPU use persists after the relevant scan, update, or app task has ended, or if you cannot identify the process and the computer remains sluggish. On a Mac, persistent unexplained activity accompanied by heat warrants device-specific diagnosis. The available guidance does not establish a universal CPU percentage that separates normal from abnormal idle use, so judge the reading alongside the process, duration, and symptoms.

Windows labels can vary with version and updates. Microsoft’s performance page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current lifecycle information if you need support-status details.
