Does a Claude Code Subagent Add Cost or Send More Context?

Claude Code subagents can add token usage, but there is no documented universal advisor surcharge. Billing depends on your active credential, and full-conversation sharing is not guaranteed.

Short answer: Claude Code does not document a universal extra fee for using a subagent, but delegation can create additional model requests and token use, which may increase your bill or usage. What you pay depends on the credential Claude Code is using. A subagent receives a focused task context, but Anthropic’s documentation does not say that every subagent automatically gets the full parent conversation.

What “advisor” means in Claude Code

Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation describes specialized agents, or subagents, that handle focused subtasks. This article uses “advisor” to mean that kind of delegated agent; it does not refer to a separate third-party advisor product, whose billing and context behavior would depend on that product.

Anthropic does not identify a general, fixed “advisor fee.” The relevant distinction is between a product surcharge and the usage generated when Claude Code makes additional model requests. Delegated work can involve more requests and input or output tokens, so it can raise usage without carrying a separate advisor line item.

How advisor use is billed

Claude Code supports several access routes, including Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, Anthropic Console accounts, and third-party cloud providers. These routes are not interchangeable: the active credential determines where usage is billed. See Anthropic’s Claude Code setup documentation.

Claude subscription login

If Claude Code is authenticated through an eligible Claude plan, usage is associated with that subscription’s applicable limits. Whether and how a particular use counts depends on the plan and setup; do not assume the same billing treatment as API usage.

Console, API, or gateway credentials

When a gateway credential variable or apiKeyHelper is active, Claude Code sends that credential instead of the developer’s Claude subscription login. The subscription’s usage limits do not apply to those requests; the credential owner is billed per token, such as an organization’s Console or cloud-provider account. Anthropic also notes that setting ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL alone, without a gateway credential, does not replace the subscription login. Details are in the Other LLM gateways documentation.

For API-style billing, costs depend on the model and the input and output tokens used. Tool definitions and tool outputs can add token overhead as well. Because model rates can change, check Anthropic’s current pricing page for the credential and model you actually use rather than relying on a fixed estimate for an advisor.

Does a subagent receive your whole conversation?

Not necessarily—and the documentation does not establish a universal rule either way. Anthropic describes subagents as working on focused subtasks, which means a task is delegated with context relevant to that work. It does not say that every subagent gets a verbatim copy of the entire parent conversation, or that none of the parent context can be passed along.

A model’s context window is a token budget, and context awareness concerns how much of that budget remains. That concept alone does not determine which messages, files, or instructions Claude Code gives a particular subagent. The task and tool configuration matter. Anthropic explains the context-window concept in its prompting best practices.

How to set a CLI spending cap

For CLI print mode, Claude Code documents --max-budget-usd as a budget cap. With Claude Code v2.1.217 or later, reaching the cap prevents another subagent from being spawned and stops background subagents that are still running. See the CLI reference for the option and version requirement.

This control applies to the documented CLI behavior; it is not a promise that every interface or every charge outside the process it controls is covered.
