Use Flexbox when items should flow and distribute space along one axis—a row or a column. Use Grid when items need a shared structure across both rows and columns. The choice depends on how the layout should behave, not on whether the component is small or large. You can also use both in the same page.
How to choose between Flexbox and Grid
Start by asking how many axes the layout needs to control and whether items on different rows must line up in shared tracks.
- Choose Flexbox when a content-sized group should flow in a row or column and adapt or distribute its space. Flexbox is content-out: the items’ content and sizes help shape the result. MDN explains the distinction between Grid and other layout methods.
- Choose Grid when you need a deliberate structure across rows and columns, or need to control tracks, placement, spans, or overlap. Grid is layout-in: you declare the structure and place items within it. MDN’s Grid overview covers tracks and item placement.
Neither method is universally better. The CSS Working Group describes them as having different specialties, despite some overlap: CSS Grid Layout Module Level 1.
Flexbox vs. Grid at a glance
| Decision | Flexbox | Grid |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | One axis at a time: a row or a column. | Two dimensions together: rows and columns. |
| Where layout is defined | Set the direction on the container; items manage flexible sizing and behavior. | Define tracks and much of the structure on the container; items can be explicitly placed or auto-placed. |
| Wrapping | Each wrapped line distributes its items independently. | Shared tracks preserve alignment across rows, including an incomplete final row. |
| Typical cue | Let a content-driven group flow and distribute along one axis. | Keep a deliberate two-dimensional structure or control placement across both axes. |
| Using both | Can handle a one-axis region inside a larger Grid layout. | Can structure a page or component while Flexbox handles individual groups. |
What happens when items wrap?
Flexbox can wrap items, but it does not turn the wrapped lines into shared columns. Each line distributes its own items, so a short final line may not align beneath the items in the rows above. This suits layouts where each line can adapt independently.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Grid maintains shared tracks. If the final row has fewer items than earlier rows, those items remain aligned to the same grid columns rather than being redistributed as a separate flex line. For examples of this difference, see MDN’s guide to wrapping flex items.
When to use both
A page does not need one layout method throughout. Grid can establish the main two-dimensional structure, while Flexbox arranges a navigation row, toolbar, or other one-axis group inside it. The methods are complementary, and MDN discusses combining them in its Grid basics guide and its overview of layout methods.

A practical decision checklist
- Use Flexbox if the primary job is to arrange items along a single row or column and let their content influence their sizing.
- Use Grid if rows and columns need to work as one coordinated structure, or items need deliberate placement, spanning, or overlap.
- If choosing Flexbox with wrapping, check whether independent line distribution is acceptable.
- Do not choose based only on whether the component is small or the page is large; choose based on axes and alignment needs.
For the broader relationship between the methods, see MDN’s Flexbox layout guidance.
