There is no universal phone-camera settings checklist for an external camera module. First confirm that your phone supports the camera and that your app can select it; then adjust only settings your device or app actually provides. For USB cameras, those may include camera selection, USB access, orientation, rotation, video quality, audio input, and power. Manual focus, exposure, white balance, or lens controls are not guaranteed.
First identify the type of external camera
This guide focuses on a separate USB camera or webcam connected to a phone. A clip-on lens that sits over the phone’s built-in camera is different: it generally does not appear as a second camera in the phone’s software. Wireless cameras, HDMI capture-card feeds, and another phone used as a camera can also follow different connection paths, so USB-camera instructions may not apply to them.
For a USB camera, compatibility depends on the exact phone model and operating-system build, the camera’s USB standard, the connection and power available, and the app. Android’s general external USB camera documentation describes support typically using USB Video Class (UVC), but its implementation details are for device makers—not settings that every phone owner can change.
Check compatibility before changing settings
- Phone and OS: Check the phone maker’s current support information for your exact model. USB host or OTG capability alone does not guarantee the operating system or app will recognize a camera.
- Camera: Confirm whether the phone’s supported connection method requires UVC compatibility. Google’s Pixel guidance, for example, says only USB cameras with the UVC specification are supported.
- App: Verify that the app can select an external camera. A camera that works in one app may not be available in another.
- Connection and power: Check connector type, power needs, and whether a suitable adapter, cable, or powered hub is necessary for this specific combination.
Do not buy an adapter on the assumption that it adds camera support. It can solve a connector or power problem, but it cannot add a feature that the phone or app does not support.

In a third-party USB-camera app
Some Android apps communicate with a USB camera directly rather than relying on a system-wide camera picker. The USB Camera Google Play listing describes a USB-OTG connection and preview or recording in that app. Its developer says its userspace driver is app-only and does not make the camera available to other apps. The listing also says Android 9 and later require Camera permission for full USB video-device access in this app. Grant the requested camera and USB access only to the app you intend to use, and check that app’s own instructions if the camera does not appear.
Adjust direction and rotation only if your phone provides them
Some phones expose controls for how an external camera is oriented relative to the screen. These are device-specific settings, not a standard Android menu.

Sony PDT-FP1
On the PDT-FP1, open Settings > Device connection > Connection preferences > Assign an external camera. Sony documents the following choices in its PDT-FP1 Help Guide:
- Direction: Choose “Do not specify” for a generic external-camera role, “Front-facing” when the external lens points the same way as the screen, or “Rear-facing” when it points the opposite way.
- Rotation: Choose 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270° to match the camera’s physical orientation.
Disconnect the camera before changing direction or rotation, then reconnect it. If the app does not recognize the camera afterward, close and restart the app. Aspect ratio and other display behavior can vary by app.

Check video, audio, and workload in the app
After selecting the external camera, check the app’s own options for resolution, frame rate, and audio input. Which choices appear—and whether the camera can deliver them reliably—depends on the phone, camera, connection, and app. On the documented Pixel Connected Cameras path, the active camera supplies audio; do not assume that behavior applies to other phones or apps.
Android’s general USB-camera support is intended for lighter uses such as video chat and photo kiosks. The Android platform documentation says it is not designed for performance-intensive high-resolution or high-speed streaming, augmented reality, or manual image-signal-processor, sensor, and lens control. As a result, do not expect a universal menu for manual focus, exposure, white balance, or lens settings. Those controls are available only if the specific camera, phone, and app expose them.

If the camera does not appear or the picture is wrong
- No camera in the app: Recheck model and app support, the camera’s required USB compatibility, USB access prompts, and the app’s camera picker. If the camera works only in a USB-specific app, its driver may be limited to that app.
- Wrong orientation: Look for a documented direction or rotation control on your phone. On the PDT-FP1, disconnect before changing it and reconnect afterward.
- App stopped recognizing the camera: Close and reopen the app after reconnecting. Sony specifically recommends restarting the app if it fails to recognize the external camera after a setting change.
- Connection drops or fails to start: Check the connector, USB host/OTG support, and the camera’s power draw. The USB Camera app developer recommends a good-quality OTG cable and adequate power, and notes that some devices may need a hub; these are conditional requirements, not a universal fix.
- Quality or performance is inadequate: Check the app’s available video settings and whether the phone-camera combination supports the intended workload. Android’s generic USB-camera support is not intended for demanding high-resolution or high-speed use.
Do not confuse an external camera with using the phone as a webcam
These instructions concern a camera connected to the phone. Using a Pixel phone as a webcam for another device is the reverse setup and has separate instructions in Google Pixel Camera Help.
