Android phones do not share one support lifespan: the exact model, market and manufacturer policy determine how long a phone gets major Android upgrades and security patches. The UK National Cyber Security Centre says most Android devices receive updates for up to three years after first release, while many brands now offer up to seven years. Check the maker’s policy for your exact model and region, especially its security-update end date.
How many years of updates does an Android phone get?
There is no universal Android support period. The NCSC’s guidance, updated 13 May 2025, gives a broad picture: most Android devices receive updates for up to three years after first release, while many brands offer up to seven years. Those figures describe a varied market, not a guarantee for every phone. The exact commitment depends on the model and may differ by region. The NCSC’s Android guidance advises checking Google’s end-of-support dates for Pixel phones or contacting other manufacturers.
Use the manufacturer’s stated starting point for the support clock. It is commonly the phone’s initial release or first availability, not the date you bought it. A used phone or one purchased later in its sales life may therefore have less support remaining than its age as an owner suggests.
What counts as software support?
“Software updates” can mean different things. Compare OS upgrades and security updates separately, and note whether a broader software promise also includes feature releases.

- Android OS upgrades: Major Android version changes, often delivered with the manufacturer’s own interface. A promise of a certain number of “generations” should be reported in the maker’s wording; it is not automatically the same as a promise stated in years.
- Security updates: Patches for known vulnerabilities. Depending on the policy, a phone can continue to receive security fixes after its major OS upgrades stop.
- Feature updates: Extra features may be included in a broad software-support commitment, but do not assume every manufacturer includes them.
Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro announcement is one example that explicitly combines these categories: Google committed to seven years of software support, including Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. Its footnote defines the security commitment as at least seven years from first availability in the U.S. Google Store. The announcement says support extends into 2030. Google’s Pixel 8 support announcement is dated 4 October 2023.
Samsung’s January 2024 announcement for the Galaxy S24 series promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. That is the stated policy for the S24 series, not a blanket guarantee for all Galaxy phones. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series announcement gives the model-specific terms.

The Android Open Source Project says devices should receive ongoing security support for at least two years from launch. This is security guidance for device makers, not a universal retail warranty or a promise that every Android phone sold to consumers follows the same term. Android’s system security best practices state the guidance.
How to find when your Android phone will stop getting security updates
- Identify the exact model and region. Use the model name and variant shown in your phone’s settings or on its original documentation. The manufacturer’s policy may not cover every variant or market identically.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support or security-update page. Find the entry for that exact model, not just a brand-wide headline. For Pixel, the NCSC points users to Google’s end-of-support dates; for other brands, it recommends contacting the manufacturer if needed.
- Check the support clock and both commitments. Record the stated start date or event, the guaranteed security-update end date, and the number of major OS upgrades if published. Do not infer the security end date from the OS-upgrade count.
- Check your current patch level. In Android Settings, look for the security update or Android security update entry; the exact menu wording can vary by device. Compare its date with the manufacturer’s policy and account for regional or carrier rollout timing.
A manufacturer’s support term does not mean that every update arrives everywhere on the same day. For example, OnePlus cautions that its listed information applies to relevant models and that delivery timing can vary by country, region or model. Its UK Product Security Update Period page directs readers to model-specific information; the available page does not establish a duration that should be generalized to all OnePlus phones.

Does a delayed update mean support has ended?
Not necessarily. Update availability and installation are separate: a patch may be released but reach a particular device later, or installation may be postponed. Android Enterprise documentation describes over-the-air updates and managed-device controls that can defer installation for up to 30 days; that is a delay mechanism, not an extension or reduction of the manufacturer’s support window. The documentation also warns that postponement can delay critical updates. Android’s system-update management documentation was updated 5 March 2026.
Cadence is another separate question. A stated support term does not promise monthly patches unless the manufacturer says so. Google says Pixel updates are released after testing rather than on a fixed calendar day each month.

What to compare when choosing a phone
Do not compare phones by one headline number alone. Put the relevant terms side by side:
- the final guaranteed security-update date;
- the number of major Android OS upgrades;
- when the support clock starts;
- whether the commitment covers your precise model variant and region; and
- any published patch cadence or carrier and regional qualifications.
For enterprise-qualified devices, Android Enterprise Recommended requires published security-update end dates and guaranteed OS-upgrade information for relevant enrolled devices, with requirements that differ by category and version. Enterprise qualification should not be mistaken for a consumer-device promise. Android Enterprise Recommended requirements set out those program rules.

What to do when your phone reaches end of support
Once the manufacturer’s security-support period ends, the phone no longer receives security updates under that policy. The NCSC advises replacing an end-of-life device to maintain security standards. Confirm the end date with the manufacturer rather than estimating it from the phone’s purchase date or from a broad brand policy.
