Those are different problems, so check them in that order rather than repeating the same fix. The steps below distinguish Xbox One from Xbox Series X|S where the available guidance does, and flag when advice comes from support for one specific game.
Start by identifying what is failing
Note what you see before changing settings:
- Missing: You cannot find the game in your library.
- Download or install failure: The download will not start, is stuck, or stops with an error.
- Launch failure: The game appears installed, but will not open.
Keep the console model and the game’s exact error wording or code handy. The right checks depend on whether the problem is visibility, installation, or launch.

If the game is missing from your library
Check Ready to install on Xbox One
On Xbox One, open My games & apps > Ready to install and look for the game. Microsoft lists this as a check when a game or app does not appear in the library: Microsoft’s instructions for finding games and add-ons on Xbox One.

Check console compatibility
If the console shows a compatibility message, verify that the game has a version for your Xbox model. Microsoft notes that some apps and games work only on specific device types. A title being free—or appearing in an Xbox-related store listing—does not by itself establish that it supports every Xbox generation or console.

If the download will not start or gets stuck
Confirm the console is online
Check that the console can connect to the network and reach online services. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S service guide includes testing a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and checking for system updates. These checks can help narrow down a connection or software issue, but they do not diagnose every download failure: Microsoft’s Xbox Series S service guide.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if practical
If you suspect Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection to the router if one is available. Microsoft’s service guide includes both connection types. This is an optional comparison, not a guaranteed fix; it will not resolve an outage, a compatibility problem, or an issue specific to the game or account. There is no need to buy a cable just to try the other checks first.

Check for a system update
Look for an available console system-software update. An update check is included in Microsoft’s Xbox Series S service procedure, but the cited guide is not a consumer download-troubleshooting manual. Treat it as one useful check, not proof that outdated software is causing the problem.

Start with the game publisher’s support instructions, if available. The steps below are from Focus Entertainment’s Xbox Series X|S support page for MIO: Memories in Orbit; they are an example for that game, not a universal procedure guaranteed to fix every free-to-play title.

- Update Xbox system software. Check for and install an available console update.
- Check the Home Xbox setting. Confirm the console’s Home Xbox designation as described in the publisher’s instructions.
- Restart or power cycle the console. Follow the publisher’s restart procedure. The page says, “This process does not erase any of your games or data.” A restart is not the same as a factory reset.
- Reinstall the game. If the earlier checks do not help, uninstall and reinstall the affected title, following the publisher’s guidance for that game.

- Your Xbox model and the game’s name.
- Whether the failure happens before download, during installation, or when launching.
- The exact error wording or code.
- Whether other downloads or games work on the same console.
Microsoft directs users with Xbox console installation problems to Xbox Support: Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting page says, “For help troubleshooting game or app installation problems on your Xbox console, go to support.xbox.com.” Use Xbox Support for console-specific installation help and share the details you collected.
