Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To resume a failed multi-step workflow without repeating completed steps, recover it from the orchestration system’s durable checkpoint or execution history—not by blindly rerunning the whole job. A durable engine can replay workflow logic and reuse recorded results for completed steps, then retry unfinished work under its retry policy. The important exception is a side effect that took effect externally before the workflow recorded success: that step may run again, so make it idempotent or reconcile its outcome before retrying.
What “resume” means depends on the workflow platform
Workflow tools use different recovery operations, and the labels are not interchangeable. Replay rebuilds workflow decisions from persisted history; retry makes another attempt at incomplete work. Resume may mean continuing an instance that was suspended, while restart can create a new execution rather than continuing the failed one. Check what your workflow type actually supports before choosing an operation.
For example, AWS Lambda Durable Execution documents replaying completed steps from checkpointed results rather than executing their logic again: AWS Lambda: Idempotency. Azure Durable Functions’ HTTP resume operation is specifically for a previously suspended orchestration, not a general command to continue every failed instance: Microsoft Learn: HTTP APIs in Durable Functions. Azure also documents checkpoints and retry policies for failed activities and sub-orchestrations: Microsoft Learn: Durable Orchestrations Overview.
Recover a failed workflow safely
- Identify the exact run. Find the stable execution or instance ID, then check whether it is suspended, failed, still running, or already complete. Different states may allow different recovery operations.
- Inspect history and the failure. Review the workflow input, last error, and step history or checkpoint. Confirm which steps have durable completion records and which work was interrupted. If replay runs workflow code against stored history, keep workflow decisions consistent with that history.
- Classify the failed operation. A read or safe upsert is usually suitable for retry. For a charge, message send, or other external side effect, determine whether the downstream system committed it even though the workflow did not record success.
- Make uncertain side effects safe. Before retrying, query or reconcile the downstream state, or use an idempotency mechanism such as a stable key. Do not blindly repeat a non-idempotent operation whose outcome is unknown.
- Use the platform’s supported recovery control. Apply its documented resume or retry operation and policy. If only a restart is available, establish whether it creates a new execution and how previously completed work is protected from duplication.
- Verify the result. Check the run’s status and subsequent step results rather than treating an accepted request as proof of success. Azure’s HTTP API, for example, returns acceptance for a resume request; callers should query instance status and confirm the instance reached Running.
- Record the recovery. Keep the execution ID, failed step, downstream outcome, idempotency key, and action taken so operators can distinguish a replayed result from a genuinely repeated operation.
Prevent duplicate side effects when retrying
Replay and retry do not by themselves provide exactly-once execution. AWS Durable Execution documentation warns that “Replay and retry can each run the same operation more than once.” It distinguishes at-least-once and at-most-once-per-retry behavior, but neither guarantees that a step runs exactly once across the whole workflow. A configured retry can still make another attempt even when an individual attempt uses at-most-once semantics. See AWS Durable Execution SDK: Idempotency and retries.

Use a stable idempotency key
Give one logical operation the same key on every attempt, and rely on the downstream service’s documented duplicate-request behavior. AWS advises generating the key inside the durable step so replay does not create a different key. A duplicate-request response may mean the first attempt succeeded; handle that according to the service’s documented semantics rather than treating every duplicate as a fresh failure.
Use conditional writes or upserts
Make repeated requests converge on the same state: for example, create a record only if absent or set a known value using a stable identifier. AWS describes conditional writes, SQL conflict handling, and upserts as idempotency patterns. Avoid unguarded inserts or counter increments if a repeat would change the result twice.

Make the check and mutation atomic
If your application controls the database, put the existence check and state change in one transaction. A separate “check, then write” sequence can race with another attempt and allow duplicates.
Deduplicate events with deterministic IDs
Assign a repeatable identifier to an event and have consumers deduplicate on that ID. This helps make repeated delivery safe; it does not make an unguarded external operation exactly once.

Use no-retry behavior only when the trade-off is acceptable
A no-retry strategy combined with at-most-once-per-retry behavior can constrain automatic attempts, but it also gives up automatic recovery after an interrupted attempt. AWS discusses this limitation in its idempotency and retry guidance. Prefer idempotent operations where possible so recovery can proceed without relying on a fragile exactly-once assumption.

| Recovery concern | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Persisted progress | Are step outcomes stored, and are completed results reused during replay? |
| Recovery semantics | Does the system replay workflow logic, retry incomplete activities, resume suspended runs, restart failed runs, or require a new execution? |
| Side-effect safety | Can activities run more than once? Can they use stable idempotency keys, conditional writes, or other deduplication? |
| Retry controls | Can retries be bounded, delayed, filtered by error class, or disabled for a particular step? |
| Operator verification | Can you query status and inspect execution history, step results, and failure details? |
| History and retention | How long is history kept, and does it apply to the workflow type in use? AWS Step Functions documents differences in execution guarantees and history behavior among Standard, asynchronous Express, and synchronous Express workflows; consult the AWS Step Functions Developer Guide for the current type-specific details. |
Do not assume that a recovery feature documented for one workflow type or invocation path applies to another. For instance, AWS Lambda Durable Execution documents execution-name idempotency for execution starts, with caveats for event source mappings. Confirm the behavior for the way your workflow is actually invoked.
