What Microsoft Fabric Copilot Can and Cannot Do

Fabric Copilot offers different AI assistance by workload. Learn what it can do, where it falls short, what access it requires, and how to validate its output.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Fabric Copilot can help with workload-specific tasks such as transforming data, generating insights, and creating visualizations—but it is not one universal agent, and its features differ by workload and supported item. Treat its output as a draft to review, not as guaranteed-correct or autonomous work.

What can Microsoft Fabric Copilot do?

Fabric Copilot is a set of generative AI assistance experiences built into Fabric and Power BI. The tasks available depend on the workload and item you are using; a capability in one Copilot experience does not imply that every Fabric experience supports it. Microsoft’s Copilot overview describes assistance with data transformation, insight generation, and visualization. Check the Fabric Copilot feature-status table for current workload, item, and release availability.

Data Factory and Dataflow Gen2

In Data Factory, Copilot can help author data-integration work from natural-language instructions, including work with Dataflow Gen2. It can assist with expressing a transformation or asking for help, but the resulting authoring still needs review in the context of the actual data and intended workflow. See Microsoft’s Data Factory Copilot documentation for the experience and its specific constraints.

Other Fabric workloads

Other Copilot experiences are tied to their own workloads and supported items, and may have different capabilities or release states. Rather than assume a feature is available everywhere, use Microsoft’s current feature-status table to check the particular experience you plan to use.

What can Copilot in Fabric not do?

Microsoft documents several specific limitations for Data Factory Copilot. These are boundaries of that workload’s experience, not a complete list of limitations for every Fabric Copilot.

  • It cannot perform transformations or explanations across multiple queries in a single input.
  • It does not understand previous inputs and cannot undo authoring changes that have been committed.
  • It cannot make query-layout changes.
  • It may give an inaccurate result when an evaluation depends on data that is not present in the sample imported into the session.
  • An unsupported skill may fail without returning an error message.

These Data Factory limits are described in Microsoft’s Data Factory Copilot documentation. Across experiences, Microsoft also warns that generative AI output can be non-deterministic and may not be accurate, reliable, or truthful. Review generated output, inspect code, request an explanation when useful, and validate results against trusted sources; Microsoft’s Copilot usage guidance explains this caution.

Does Fabric Copilot need a paid capacity?

Yes, under Microsoft’s cited enablement guidance, Copilot requires a paid Fabric capacity of F2 or higher, or Power BI Premium capacity of P1 or higher. Trial SKUs are not supported in the cited FAQ and Data Factory setup guidance. Availability also depends on a supported region, administrator enablement, a workspace assigned to an enabled capacity, and appropriate user access.

Geographic rules can affect setup, including whether an administrator must allow processing outside the capacity’s region. Check the current Copilot FAQ and Data Factory setup guidance for the applicable requirements in your tenant and region.

Can Fabric Copilot see data I cannot access?

Microsoft says Copilot’s data access depends on the user’s Fabric permissions and role-level security. A prompt does not grant access to data the user is not permitted to see. That access boundary does not guarantee that a generated answer is correct: permission checks and answer accuracy are separate issues. See the Copilot FAQ for Microsoft’s explanation of access.

What governance protections apply to Fabric Copilot?

Do not assume that audit, classification, sensitivity-label, encryption, or data-loss-prevention coverage is identical across all Copilot experiences. Microsoft Purview’s AI interaction documentation for Fabric currently describes supported coverage first for Power BI Copilot; support for other Fabric Copilot experiences and Fabric Data Agent is preview. Its capability table distinguishes individual protections, so administrators should check the specific control and experience rather than infer uniform coverage.

How to check whether a Copilot feature fits your work

  1. Identify the workload and item. Confirm which Fabric experience you intend to use, rather than treating Copilot as a single platform-wide feature.
  2. Check its task and release status. Consult the current feature-status table for the supported item, capability, and status.
  3. Confirm tenant and capacity eligibility. Verify the capacity, region, administrator setting, workspace assignment, and user access in Microsoft’s FAQ and workload-specific setup instructions.
  4. Check data access and governance separately. Confirm the user’s permissions and role-level security, then verify Purview coverage for the specific experience and control.
  5. Validate the result. Inspect generated code or transformations and compare outputs with trusted data and expected results before relying on them.

Microsoft says Copilot capabilities evolve and recommends following monthly Fabric updates. Recheck feature availability, preview or general-availability status, eligibility rules, and Purview coverage when planning or administering a deployment.
