Wine lets many Windows applications run on Linux, macOS, and other POSIX-compliant systems without installing or booting Windows. It works as a compatibility layer that translates Windows API calls into services the host system can provide—not as a virtual machine. That architectural difference removes the need for a Windows guest OS, but it does not guarantee that a particular app or all its features will work.
How does Wine work?
Windows applications request operating-system services through Windows APIs. Wine implements and translates those interfaces so applications can use facilities available on a POSIX-compliant host, such as Linux, macOS, or BSD.
WineHQ describes the distinction this way: “Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly.” Wine is therefore a compatibility layer, not a Windows installation: it does not boot a Windows guest operating system. WineHQ’s project description explains the design.
How is Wine different from a virtual machine?
| Approach | What it runs | What that means for Windows apps |
|---|---|---|
| Wine | Wine’s Windows-compatible interfaces on the host operating system | Translates or implements the interfaces an app expects; no Windows guest OS is required. |
| Virtual machine | A guest operating system in a virtualized environment | Provides a Windows environment for applications that need it, rather than translating their API calls through Wine. |
WineHQ says its approach avoids performance and memory penalties associated with other methods, but that is the project’s general description, not a controlled Wine-versus-VM benchmark. The available evidence does not establish that Wine is always faster, uses less memory in every case, or supports more applications. The practical choice depends on the program and the features you need.

Will a particular Windows application work?
Compatibility is application-specific and can depend on the app’s version, dependencies, and environment. Check the exact program—and, where possible, its specific release—in WineHQ’s Application Database before depending on it. A database entry is a useful point of reference, not a guarantee that your installation will work in your setup.
Test the functions you actually rely on, not just whether the app installs or opens. An app that starts may still fail to perform a needed task reliably. If you change the application version, Wine version, or environment, verify those important functions again. The sources cited here do not establish results for any particular application.

What do Wine’s recent releases tell you?
Wine’s release status changes over time. As listed by WineHQ on October 4, 2026, Wine 11.0 was the stable release and Wine 11.19 was the development release; WineHQ dated the 11.19 announcement October 2, 2026. Check WineHQ’s current release listing for the status at the time you read this.
In its January 13, 2026 announcement for Wine 11.0, the Wine team reported “around 6,300 individual changes, and more than 600 bug fixes” over a year of development. It named NTSYNC support and completion of the new WoW64 architecture as release highlights. Those figures describe the project’s reported work on that release; they are not an application compatibility percentage or a performance benchmark. Read the Wine 11.0 announcement.

How long has Wine been around?
WineHQ says the project began in 1993 to support Windows 3.1 programs on Linux, and that its first stable release arrived in 2008. Its ongoing development means release numbers and compatibility information can change, so consult WineHQ when making a decision about a current app or release.
