That difference can make punctuation, digits, and embedded English identifiers look out of place without changing the source’s underlying order. Identifier acceptance and normalization are separate matters: each programming language defines its own rules.
Why Arabic source can look different from its stored order
Unicode represents text in logical order: characters appear in the sequence in which they are encoded. The Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm (UBA) then determines how mixed-direction text is laid out for display. Arabic text generally runs right to left; embedded Latin identifiers and digits generally run left to right. A displayed line can therefore look unlike the sequence a parser reads.
As Unicode’s Unicode Standard Annex #9, version 52, dated 2026-09-01, puts it: “When working with bidirectional text, the characters are still interpreted in logical order—only the display is affected.” The display order is not evidence that the parser reversed the source characters.
Why punctuation and digits can appear misplaced
The UBA considers character direction properties, including strong, weak, and neutral classes. Punctuation and brackets are often neutral: their displayed position is resolved from surrounding text, not from a permanently assigned left or right side. In a line mixing Arabic, English, numbers, and symbols, punctuation can consequently appear on a side that seems unexpected when read visually.

Digits add another variable. Unicode’s Bidirectional Algorithm FAQ explains that digit behavior in context depends on script and, for Arabic, on the digit set. Do not infer source order or token boundaries from a visual impression alone; check the actual character sequence.
Identifier rules vary by programming language
Unicode does not impose one universal rule for which Arabic characters can appear in every programming language’s identifiers. Unicode Standard Annex #31 recommends XID_Start for an identifier’s first character and XID_Continue for subsequent characters, while allowing languages to define a more specific profile. Combining marks may be allowed as continuation characters. Acceptance can also depend on the language’s Unicode data version.

Rust
The Rust Reference’s cited identifier rules use (XID_Start | _) XID_Continue* and Unicode 17.0. Rust rejects ZWNJ and ZWJ in identifiers and normalizes identifiers to NFC for equality. These are Rust-specific choices, not general Unicode rules. See the Rust Reference on identifiers.

Python 3.14.7
Python 3.14.7 derives identifier sets from XID_Start and XID_Continue and closes them under NFKC normalization. Its lexical specification applies normalization at the lexical level. That does not mean every runtime API that accepts a name as a string will normalize its argument in the same way. See Python 3.14.7’s lexical analysis reference.
Why whole-file normalization before parsing is unsafe
Normalization is not a generic cleanup step to apply to an entire source file before parsing. Unicode’s identifier guidance says token parsing should first locate identifiers before applying normalization or case-mapping distinctions. The language’s lexer determines where an identifier starts and ends; its own rules determine how that identifier is normalized and compared.

Arabic presentation forms merit particular caution: Unicode’s normalization guidance recommends excluding them from identifiers. Format characters and joining controls also require language-specific treatment. Follow the target language’s documented lexical and runtime behavior rather than transforming source text with a blanket normalization pass. See the Unicode identifier guidance and Unicode Normalization Forms.

Invisible bidirectional formatting controls can affect display and make a line look as though tokens appear in a different order from their logical sequence. Unicode’s Unicode Security Considerations discusses risks from visually confusable mixed-direction text. This is a reason for deliberate review, not a reason to treat Arabic or all right-to-left code as unsafe.

- Reveal invisible formatting controls in the editor or another inspection tool where possible.
- Inspect the source in logical order, including the actual code points around suspicious punctuation or identifiers.
- Check tokenization with the compiler or interpreter for the exact language version in use.
- When reviewing changes, compare the underlying character sequence rather than relying only on rendered text.
These checks distinguish a display surprise from a lexical or security issue. The UBA controls layout; the language lexer controls how source characters become tokens.
