A Linux update can disrupt a drawing tablet at several different points: device detection, kernel input support, libinput’s tablet recognition, the desktop session, or the drawing app. First find out where the pen or its features disappear; the update may be related, but timing alone does not prove it caused the problem.
Find out what still works
“The tablet does not work” can describe several different failures. Check separately whether the system detects the tablet, whether the pointer moves, and whether pressure, buttons, or touch respond. A tablet’s pen and pad buttons may appear as separate logical input devices, so partial operation is useful evidence rather than proof that the whole device is missing. See libinput’s tablet support documentation.
- Connect the tablet directly if possible, then check the system’s input-device list.
- Note exactly what fails: no detection, no pointer movement, no pressure, buttons only, or failure in just one application.
- Record the tablet make and model, Linux distribution and release, running kernel, desktop, session type (Wayland or Xorg), and relevant driver or libinput package versions.
Check whether libinput rejects the tablet
On systems using libinput, its device listing and debugging tools can help show whether the tablet is recognized and whether it reports a capability rejection. One documented message is missing tablet capabilities: xy pen btn-stylus resolution. Ignoring this device. The wording identifies missing data; it is not a generic instruction to edit system rules. The libinput tablet-debugging guide explains the possibilities.
xy: the expected X/Y axes are absent. The documentation notes that a misappliedID_INPUT_TABLETudev tag can be involved.penorbtn-stylus: expected stylus-tool or button bits are absent, which can point to the kernel driver or device HID descriptor.resolution: X/Y axis resolution is unset; hardware-database data may be relevant.
Use the exact message and device model to check your distribution’s documentation or an upstream bug tracker before changing rules or configuration. The libinput FAQ likewise says ignored-tablet capability messages usually indicate a device or kernel-driver problem.

Separate kernel support from session-specific configuration
The kernel provides device support, while userspace and the desktop session affect how tablet input is configured and delivered. Wacom’s Linux guidance describes input-wacom as a standalone version of its kernel drivers; it may help where newer kernel-driver support is needed but installing a newer kernel is not feasible. Wacom recommends installing available distribution updates first. This is Wacom-specific guidance, not a general fix for Huion, XP-Pen, or other brands. See Wacom’s driver basics.
For Wacom tablets, the session also matters: Wacom documents xf86-input-wacom for Xorg and libinput for Wayland-based systems. A tool or configuration intended for one session may not control the other. Avoid layering vendor utilities, OpenTabletDriver, and kernel or Xorg changes until you know which layer currently handles the device. See Wacom’s driver overview.

Compare Wayland, Xorg, and drawing applications
If the pen moves the desktop pointer but pressure or drawing input fails in one program, keep that distinction clear. Test a second tablet-aware application. If both Wayland and Xorg sessions are already available, compare behavior with the same tablet and app. A change between sessions narrows the issue to a session or configuration boundary; it does not by itself identify the cause.
Wacom identifies Mutter (GNOME), KWin (KDE Plasma), and wlroots-based compositors among common Wayland compositors. That broad protocol support does not guarantee identical tablet behavior across every device, application, and release. See Wacom’s Wayland guidance.

The KDE tablet handbook advises checking Linux Wacom or DIGImend support when a tablet is not detected and also describes an Xorg configuration fallback. Treat hand-edited Xorg configuration as specific to Xorg, and consult your distribution’s current documentation before changing it. See the KDE KCM Tablet Handbook.
Use the previous kernel as a comparison
If the previous kernel is still installed, boot it once and test the same tablet and application. If the tablet works there but not with the current kernel, that makes a kernel-related regression more plausible; it does not confirm one. Record both kernel versions, the result, and relevant logs. You can use the same comparison approach for sessions if both are installed. Do not treat rollback as a permanent fix without investigating the cause.

Collect useful details before reporting a bug
A report that says only “the tablet stopped after an update” is difficult to diagnose. Include:
- Tablet make and model, connection type, and whether any tablet functions still work.
- Distribution and release, previous and current kernel versions, desktop environment, and Wayland or Xorg session.
- Relevant kernel-driver and libinput package versions, plus the packages changed in the update if known.
- The exact symptom and whether it affects every application or only one.
- Device-listing output, relevant logs, and any libinput capability-rejection message.
These details help distinguish a device or kernel-driver issue from session and application behavior; the libinput FAQ points readers with ignored-tablet capability messages toward device or kernel-driver troubleshooting.
