AI study apps may process more than the notes you upload. Depending on the provider, feature, and account type, their policies may cover documents, prompts, generated quizzes and other outputs, account and device details, and activity such as creating sets or joining classes. Some providers say certain user content and interactions may be used to train or improve AI models; others describe different controls or exceptions. The policy for your specific service and account—not a blanket rule about study apps—determines what applies.
What counts as “learning data” in a study app?
“Learning data” can mean both what you study and how you use the service. Policies may describe collection of uploaded notes, photos, documents, or files; flashcards and other generated study materials; prompts and interactions; account or device information; and usage activity. The categories and purposes vary by provider, feature, settings, location, and account agreement.
For example, Quizlet’s indexed privacy policy says service activity can include creating a study set, joining a class or study group, and viewing or interacting with content. The policy is listed as last updated May 15, 2026; its description here is limited to what that official listing states. Quizlet Privacy Policy
Do AI study apps train on your notes?
There is no single answer for every app. StudyFetch’s consumer privacy policy, last updated August 13, 2026, says it may use uploaded or generated information—including prompts, inputs, outputs, and other interaction data—to train, improve, and develop AI and machine-learning models. It excludes data obtained through Google Workspace APIs and Google Photos APIs from that stated use. StudyFetch Privacy Policy

StudyFetch’s standard-service terms also describe using user contributions to train, test, and improve AI systems. They say model parameters or other improvements derived from contributions may remain after an uploaded contribution is deleted. The terms carve out Google User Data and say a conflicting enterprise, institutional, or other written agreement governs instead of the standard terms. Read the agreement that applies to your account rather than assuming that deleting a file reverses a model improvement. StudyFetch Terms of Service
These are StudyFetch’s stated practices for the account types and data sources its documents describe; they should not be generalized to other providers. Policy text also describes stated practices, not independent testing of an app’s network traffic, storage, or model training.

Do school accounts have different privacy terms?
They can. StudyFetch says educational institutions and enterprise clients operate under separate agreements with enhanced protections. It also identifies an NVIDIA-sponsored K-12 program whose terms prohibit using student data to train its or third-party AI models. That specific program’s terms do not establish what applies to every school account: check with the school and identify the agreement covering the service you use.
Knowt’s privacy policy describes information coming from schools or educators and sharing information with schools during in-school use. It also describes classroom-context sharing. A school-managed login or class workspace may therefore involve people and rules beyond a student’s personal account. Knowt Privacy Policy

Model training and sharing are separate questions. Knowt’s policy says student-generated flashcards and notes may be shared with other Knowt users. Before adding sensitive material, check the visibility of the particular set, class, or workspace and who can access it; the policy statement does not mean every item is automatically public.

Deletion, access controls, and consent settings are distinct controls, and their effects are not necessarily identical. Quizlet’s GDPR help page explains that users can access and update personal information and content through account settings, delete an account, and disable some features for which they gave consent. Knowt says some collection can be declined or blocked through browser or operating-system controls, but doing so may make features unavailable or less functional. StudyFetch’s terms add a separate consideration: derived model parameters or improvements may be retained after the underlying uploaded contribution is deleted. Look for the specific policy’s retention and deletion language, including any school agreement.
