For everyday use, leave Android Developer options at their defaults unless you have a specific reason to change a setting. The screen is primarily a collection of controls for profiling and debugging apps, not a menu of guaranteed performance upgrades. A setting is a sensible change when you understand its effect, need it for a defined task, and can restore it afterward. Names and locations vary by Android version and device maker, so check the wording on your phone.
Which Developer options are reasonable to change?
There is no universal safe-or-unsafe checklist: the effect depends on what the control does and what you need your phone to do. Android describes Developer options as tools for profiling and debugging app performance. Use the setting’s documented effect—not the word “developer” or a promise of a speed boost—to decide whether to change it. Android Developers’ Developer options documentation notes that the screen’s name or location can differ across devices.
- Visual preference: Window animation scale and Transition animation scale change how quickly animations play.
- Display and power: Stay awake keeps the screen on while the device is plugged in.
- Computer access: USB debugging allows Android Debug Bridge (ADB) tools to communicate with the device; wireless debugging also exists on supported setups.
- Graphics diagnostics: Force GPU rendering and Disable HW overlays alter graphics behavior and are not universal performance fixes.
- App lifecycle testing: Don’t keep activities and Background process limit deliberately change how apps behave when you leave them.
Animation scales: a preference change
Window animation scale and Transition animation scale control the playback speed of their respective animations. A lower scale makes animations play faster; it does not make apps perform their underlying work faster. Change these if you prefer a snappier visual feel, and restore the defaults if you prefer the original pacing. Android’s documentation describes these animation controls.
Stay awake: useful while plugged in, but easy to forget
Stay awake keeps the display on while the phone is plugged in. That can help when a task requires the screen to remain continuously visible. Android warns that keeping the screen on can drain the battery quickly, so turn the setting off when the task is finished. Android Developer options documentation describes the setting; Android’s battery guidance also warns about the power cost of keeping the screen on.

USB debugging: enable it only for a trusted computer
USB debugging lets ADB tools on a computer communicate with the phone. On Android 4.2.2 and later, connecting a debugging computer prompts you to unlock the device and accept that computer’s RSA key. Accept only when you recognize and trust the computer, and turn USB debugging off when you no longer need it. Android’s ADB documentation explains the connection and authorization model.
Android also supports wireless debugging, but the exact controls and setup vary by Android version and device. Use the instructions for the device in hand rather than assuming every phone presents the same menu path. Android’s ADB documentation covers USB and Wi-Fi debugging.

GPU controls: don’t treat them as speed switches
Force GPU rendering
This setting forces GPU use for 2D drawing in apps that were not written to use GPU rendering by default. That change does not establish that every app or phone will run faster; leave it at its default unless you are investigating a specific graphics issue. Android documents the setting’s effect.
Disable HW overlays
Hardware overlays can reduce processing demands by allowing the display hardware to handle some screen composition. Disabling overlays means apps share video memory and must do additional collision and clipping checks. Because this changes graphics behavior rather than providing a guaranteed upgrade, leave it at the default unless troubleshooting a particular problem. App lifecycle controls are for testing, not routine optimization
Don’t keep activities
When enabled, this destroys each activity as soon as you leave its main view. Apps may therefore need to recreate screens when you return. It is a testing control for examining app behavior, not a general way to make a phone faster. Android documents its effect.
Background process limit
This setting changes how many processes can run in the background. Limiting them alters normal app behavior, so do not use it as a routine optimization unless you have a specific testing reason. Android’s Developer options documentation describes the control.

A safe way to change a setting
- Identify the task. Know what you are trying to accomplish, such as speeding up animation playback or debugging an app.
- Check the setting’s effect. If its purpose or consequence is unclear, leave it unchanged.
- Record its original value. That gives you a clear way back if the change causes an unwanted effect.
- Change only what the task requires. Avoid changing several unrelated controls at once.
- Restore the original value when finished. For USB or wireless debugging, disable access when the debugging task is over.
These steps are a practical way to manage the documented effects of the controls; Android does not prescribe them as a universal procedure.
