Usually, yes—with sensible precautions. ChromeOS uses browser sandboxing, system integrity checks, encryption and automatic updates to limit many common risks. These safeguards reduce what a malicious webpage or app can do, but they do not prevent phishing, account theft, misuse of permissions or every software vulnerability. “Browser-based operating system” is a broad description, not one shared security standard; the protections below are specific to ChromeOS.
How safe is ChromeOS in practice?
ChromeOS is designed with multiple barriers between web content, apps and the core operating system. That makes it harder for ordinary website code to reach device resources directly. Safety still depends on whether the device is supported and updated, which apps and extensions you install, what access you grant them, and how well you protect your account.
Google and the Chromium Project describe ChromeOS security features; those vendor descriptions explain the design, not an independent ranking against Windows, macOS or other systems. The Australian Cyber Security Centre also cautions that protections have limits: an app may misuse privileges it has legitimately received.
Can a malicious website get to my files?
In the standard ChromeOS configuration described by the Chromium Project, a webpage cannot directly access your files. Chrome runs web content in restricted processes, separates untrusted input from processes that access system resources, and uses operating-system controls such as seccomp to limit access to the kernel. This is a significant boundary, not a guarantee that a browser vulnerability can never be exploited.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
A website asking for camera, microphone or location access is a separate issue from ordinary page execution: granting a permission gives the site access to that capability within the permission’s scope. Allow only what you need, and remove permissions you no longer use. Sandboxing does not make a permission harmless if the site misuses access you granted.
What ChromeOS adds beyond browser isolation
ChromeOS includes system-level safeguards as well as browser controls. Google’s security information describes a read-only operating system, Verified Boot, data encryption, a hardware security chip, sandboxing and automatic updates. Verified Boot checks system integrity at startup and is intended to detect or correct unauthorized system-software changes. Encryption and boot checks are useful safeguards, not promises that stolen devices or physical tampering are impossible.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
The Australian Cyber Security Centre says Verified Boot does not apply to ChromeOS Flex or to devices in developer mode. Check which protections apply to your particular installation rather than assuming every ChromeOS-based setup has the same configuration.
Where apps and extensions change the risk
Browser extensions
Extensions can have access broader than a single webpage. The UK National Cyber Security Centre warns that extensions can potentially read and access all web data in the browser and interact with pages you visit. Install only extensions you need from publishers you trust, inspect their requested permissions, and keep them updated. Organizations should block unknown extensions, allow-list trusted ones and monitor changes to the approved list.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
Linux apps
Linux apps on a Chromebook share a Linux environment. Google says all Linux apps run inside the same sandbox: a harmful app can affect other Linux apps, but not the rest of the Chromebook. Files and permissions shared with Linux are available to all Linux apps; the UK NCSC also notes that apps can access one another and the container’s system files. Share only necessary files and peripherals, install software from trusted sources, and keep Linux packages updated.
Android apps
Android apps run in a restricted environment, but they still use Android permissions and may exchange data within the Android subsystem or through files you move yourself. Review app permissions, install apps from sources you trust, and avoid treating the word “sandboxed” as meaning an app has no access to anything.

Threats sandboxing does not solve
- Phishing and account theft: ChromeOS cannot reliably stop you from entering credentials on a fraudulent site, or prevent an attacker from using credentials already stolen. The Australian Cyber Security Centre identifies phishing, social engineering and compromised Google account credentials as relevant threats.
- Over-privileged apps: An extension or app may misuse access you or an administrator approved. Restrict permissions and remove software you no longer need.
- Risks inside shared environments: A malicious Linux app may affect other apps or data in the same Linux environment, especially when files or permissions have been shared.
- Unsupported or unpatched devices: Automatic updates help only if your device still receives them and updates are applied. Support end dates vary by model, so check the official support status for your exact device.
- Developer mode, ChromeOS Flex and physical access: Some protections differ by configuration. The Chromium Project’s threat model also notes that a sophisticated attacker with prolonged physical access can be difficult to defend against.
How to make a Chromebook safer to use
- Keep ChromeOS and the browser updated. Leave automatic updates enabled, apply updates when offered and check that your specific device remains supported. Official descriptions give different update cadences: the Chromium Project describes Chrome’s six-week release cycle, while Google’s business security page describes full updates every four weeks and minor security fixes every two to three weeks. These are source-specific descriptions, not a universal schedule or a measure of security effectiveness.
- Protect your account. Use a unique password and multifactor authentication where available. Treat unexpected sign-in prompts and links cautiously.
- Limit extensions. Keep only those you need, check their permissions and remove ones you no longer trust or use.
- Grant only necessary access. Review site and app permissions for the camera, microphone, location, files, USB devices and other resources; revoke access that is no longer needed.
- Keep app environments tidy. Install Linux and Android apps from trusted sources and keep them updated. For Linux, remember that apps share the same environment and can access files or permissions shared with it.
- Use developer mode only when you understand the trade-off. Verify which safeguards are available for your device and configuration, including ChromeOS Flex.
- Follow workplace or school policy. For sensitive work, use organization-approved applications and device-management rules. The UK NCSC advises organizations to consider built-in apps or cloud services where practical.
When should you choose a Chromebook?
A Chromebook laptop can be a reasonable choice if your work fits ChromeOS and the specific model remains supported. Before buying or relying on one, verify its update support and confirm that the applications and peripherals you need are available. The security case is strongest when the device is supported, updates are applied, permissions are limited and the account is well protected—not simply because the system is browser-centered.
The controls described here establish how ChromeOS is designed to limit risk; they do not show that every operating system called “browser-based” has the same protections or that ChromeOS is categorically safer than alternatives.
