If you already have a Matplotlib plot, save it as an image or PDF and open the file on your Android phone. If you need to run Python on the phone, use a browser-hosted notebook such as Google Colab or a local Android notebook app. A desktop-style window from plt.show() is not guaranteed: Matplotlib’s display behavior depends on its backend and the environment running the code.
Choose the right way to view your plot
| Your situation | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You already generated the figure | Save it as PNG or PDF, then open the file on Android | A static figure; no Python runtime is needed just to view it. |
| You need to run Python without setting up a local environment | Use a browser notebook such as Google Colab | Code runs on Google’s cloud servers, so you need connectivity and a hosted-service workflow. |
| You want plot controls inside a notebook | Use a live Jupyter kernel with ipympl |
Requires a compatible notebook frontend and working widget support; Android browser compatibility is not guaranteed by Matplotlib’s documentation. |
| You want notebooks to run on the phone | Consider an Android Python/Jupyter app | Capabilities vary by app; verify its current Android compatibility and package support. |
Open a Matplotlib plot that already exists
In the Python script that creates the figure, save it to a familiar file format:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
# ... create the plot ...
plt.savefig("plot.png", dpi=150, bbox_inches="tight")
- Run the script where Matplotlib is installed. The output file is written to the path you supplied; if you use a relative path such as
plot.png, it is relative to the script’s working directory. - If the script ran on a computer or remote notebook, transfer or download the file to a location Android can access. In a hosted notebook, use its file download or export controls; the precise interface can change.
- On Android, tap the file in a file manager and open it with an image viewer or PDF reader as appropriate.
PNG is a practical choice for an image viewer. Matplotlib also documents PDF and SVG output; PDF is useful for a document or vector output. Available formats depend on the active backend. The Matplotlib backend guide describes backend output, and the savefig API documentation covers its arguments and filename behavior.
savefig accepts a path or file-like object. Matplotlib normally infers the format from a filename extension; if the filename has no extension, the documented API says PNG is the default.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Why plt.show() may not open a window
plt.show() asks the active Matplotlib backend to display figures. Interactive backends connect to a graphical user interface; non-interactive backends write output rather than opening a window. Matplotlib’s current backend documentation identifies Agg as non-interactive and suitable for file output.
So a missing pop-up does not necessarily mean the plot failed to render. Save the figure with plt.savefig("plot.png"), then check the output file. If you want pan and zoom tied to notebook code, use a notebook frontend with a running kernel and a supported interactive widget backend instead of expecting a desktop GUI window.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Run Matplotlib code without a desktop
Use a hosted notebook in a browser
Google Colab describes itself as a hosted Jupyter notebook service: you write Python in a browser, and code runs on Google cloud servers. Its welcome page includes Matplotlib examples. This avoids configuring a local Python runtime, but requires connectivity and use of the hosted service. The cited documentation does not establish how well every Android browser handles the notebook interface, or what login and account limits will apply to you.
Use Jupyter interactivity with ipympl
For interactive Matplotlib output inside a notebook, the documented activation commands are %matplotlib ipympl and %matplotlib widget. Matplotlib’s backend guide lists JupyterLab and Notebook 7+ for the widget backend. You also need a live kernel and a frontend that supports the widgets. Those requirements do not guarantee that a particular Android browser or notebook setup will work.

Consider a local Android notebook app
The Callisto publisher says its Android app runs CPython 3.10 locally through Chaquopy, reads and writes Jupyter .ipynb v4 files, includes Matplotlib in its free package set, and displays Matplotlib figures inline. These are publisher claims, not an independent compatibility test. Check the current app listing, Android requirements, package limits, and terms before choosing it; app versions and availability can change.
Why Android Python is not just desktop Python on a smaller screen
Android does not provide a system-wide Python installation or console in the desktop sense. The Python Software Foundation’s Android guide explains that Python is distributed through apps, which embed interpreters for their own use, and lists tools including Termux for Android Python workflows. That context helps explain why desktop GUI assumptions may not carry over, though it does not mean every Android environment lacks graphical options.
