Start with the sizing guide for the exact cloth diaper model, then check how it sits on your baby. A good fit covers the bottom, fastens comfortably at the waist, and has leg elastics lying flat against the thighs without gaps or deep marks. Recheck the seal after adding inserts: bulk can push the elastic away from the leg, and leaks can also come from absorbency or setup rather than size.
How to choose a cloth diaper size
Use the maker’s weight range as a starting point, not a guarantee. Ranges apply to particular brands and models; babies of the same weight can have different proportions, and diaper patterns and adjustments vary. Check the chart for the exact diaper and assess its fit on your baby.

Also distinguish a newborn diaper from an adjustable one-size diaper. “One size” does not mean every model will fit every baby from birth. For example, Kinder Cloth Diaper Co. lists its newborn diapers at about 5–12 lb and its one-size diapers at 7–35+ lb. How to check the fit
- Look up the exact model. Confirm whether it is newborn-sized or adjustable one-size, and follow the maker’s fit and adjustment instructions.
- Set the rise. Use the model’s rise snaps as directed. Kinder describes five rise positions, with the smallest setting for smaller babies and longer settings as the baby grows; other products may adjust differently. Kinder
- Fasten the waist and inspect the legs. The waist should be secure but comfortable. Check that the leg elastic sits in the thigh crease and lies flat, with no opening where a gap could form. Kinder suggests a comfortable two-finger check at the waistband, but that is its guidance rather than a rule for every diaper. Kinder’s fit checklist also says to look for no red marks. - Check coverage and movement. The diaper should cover the bottom without sagging or exposing the back when your baby moves. Kanga Care
- Recheck with the intended absorbency in place. Insert bulk can change the leg seal. If the insert pushes the elastic away from the thigh, try a trimmer fold or a different absorbency arrangement before deciding the diaper is too small. Kinder Kanga Care
When to adjust the rise or size up
Do not size up simply because your baby is older. Kanga Care advises following the diaper’s weight chart and notes that moving up too early can create gaps at the legs. If the front panel is under tension or pops open, the diaper may need more length; check its adjustment instructions and fit before changing size. Kanga Care
For an adjustable diaper, try the next rise setting when the current setting no longer gives enough length or coverage, while checking that the leg opening still seals. There is no universal age or weight that determines when to change settings: use the specific maker’s directions and the fit on your baby.

Why a cloth diaper may leak
A leak is a symptom, not proof that the diaper is too small. Note where and when it happens, then check the likely causes:

- Saturated absorbency: If the insert is soaked through, the issue may be capacity or timing rather than size.
- Insert position or bulk: Make sure the insert is properly placed and does not push the leg elastic away from the thigh.
- Cover setup: For a diaper system with a cover, check that absorbent material is not sticking out beyond the cover.
- Compression: Tight clothing can press on a wet insert and contribute to leaks.

What to compare when choosing a diaper
When comparing products, focus on the features that affect fit in practice:
- The published weight range for the exact model.
- How its rise and waist adjust.
- Whether the leg opening closes against your baby’s thighs without gaps.
- Whether the diaper gives enough coverage as your baby moves.
- Whether the intended inserts preserve the leg seal.
