Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Not necessarily. A processor’s age alone does not determine how long a phone gets updates: manufacturers set support by the exact model, and hardware capability can affect eligibility for new operating-system versions. Security updates follow a separate schedule, and chipset-vendor support can be one factor in whether Android patches are available.
Why processor age is not the whole story
A phone’s processor is part of the hardware that must support a new operating system, but its age does not establish a universal support end date. Apple’s software-update deployment guidance says older devices may be ineligible for upgrades if they lack the hardware capabilities needed for the new software. That explains one possible limit on major upgrades; it does not mean every older processor stops receiving all updates at once. Apple’s deployment guidance.
Android security patches can also depend on the chip supply chain. Samsung Mobile Security says availability depends on factors including update complexity, hardware specifications, and chipset-vendor and third-party support. This is one factor among several, not a rule that an older chip by itself ends support. Samsung Mobile Security.
Major OS upgrades and security updates are different
A major operating-system upgrade adds a new OS version. Security updates address vulnerabilities and may continue on a schedule separate from major upgrades. Apple distinguishes major upgrades from smaller software updates and Background Security Improvements; eligibility for one type does not guarantee eligibility for every other type. Likewise, do not assume that a remaining update covers every known security issue.

When checking a support promise, look for separate commitments for OS upgrades and security updates. A model might have a stated period for both, but the policy and the phone’s current release status are what determine what it receives.
Support depends on the exact model and generation
Official policies show why brand or processor name alone is not enough. Google’s current Pixel policy sets different periods by model generation. The periods below are counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US; rollout timing can vary by device and carrier. Google Pixel update policy.

Samsung’s 2022 announcement promised four OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select Galaxy devices. It qualified availability and timing by device and Android OS upgrade timing, so that historical commitment should not be generalized to every Galaxy phone. Samsung’s 2022 announcement.
How to check whether your phone is still supported
- Identify the exact model and region. Check the model name or number in the phone’s settings or on its product information. Similar names can have different policies, and market or carrier variants may matter.
- Find the manufacturer’s official update policy. Search its eligible-device list for the exact model, not just the brand or processor.
- Read OS and security terms separately. Note what kinds of updates the policy covers and how its support period is counted, such as from first retail availability.
- Check the installed version and patch level. On Pixel, Google documents these in the phone’s software update settings. Compare the displayed information with the manufacturer’s policy and current update announcements.
- Ask the manufacturer or carrier if status is unclear. An absent or ambiguous model listing is not enough to infer an end date from the processor name.
Even a supported phone may not receive an update on the same day as another device: Google says Pixel rollouts are gradual and can depend on the device and carrier.

What to compare when choosing between phones
If you are deciding whether to keep a phone or replace it, compare the support policy for each exact model rather than treating a newer processor as proof of longer support. For each candidate, record:
- the model and release generation;
- the stated OS-upgrade period and security-update period, separately;
- when the coverage period starts and whether an end date is specified; and
- any delivery qualifications, such as gradual rollout or carrier dependence.
For example, Google identifies the Pixel 8 as using its Tensor G3 processor and publishes a seven-year OS and security update policy for Pixel 8 and later, counted from first US Google Store availability. This is a model-specific policy example, not evidence that the newest processor automatically earns the longest support. Google Pixel 8 specifications.
