How to Capture Component Stack Traces in React Error Boundaries

Use info.componentStack in a class error boundary’s componentDidCatch callback to capture the React component hierarchy behind a render error.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a class error boundary, capture the React component stack in the second argument to componentDidCatch: info.componentStack. Use static getDerivedStateFromError to switch to fallback UI, and use componentDidCatch for logging or other side effects.

Capture the stack in componentDidCatch

React calls componentDidCatch(error, info) when a child—including a distant descendant—throws while rendering. The component hierarchy trace is info.componentStack. It identifies the component that threw and its parents, with source locations where available; it is not the same thing as the JavaScript call stack. See React’s Component reference.

class ErrorBoundary extends React.Component {
  state = { hasError: false };

  static getDerivedStateFromError(error) {
    return { hasError: true };
  }

  componentDidCatch(error, info) {
    reportError({
      error,
      componentStack: info.componentStack,
    });
  }

  render() {
    if (this.state.hasError) return this.props.fallback;
    return this.props.children;
  }
}

This pattern separates the two jobs: getDerivedStateFromError updates state so render can show a fallback, while componentDidCatch handles reporting. React marks using setState inside componentDidCatch to render the fallback as deprecated in favor of getDerivedStateFromError.

Before sending error data to a reporting service, apply your application’s privacy filtering and configure reporting for your environment. The example shows where to pass the trace; it does not prescribe a particular service or data-retention policy.

What the captured values contain

info.componentStack is the React hierarchy

The component stack describes the React component tree associated with a render error, rather than every function call that led to it. Keep it as a separate field in reports so it is not confused with a JavaScript stack trace.

The thrown value may not be an Error

JavaScript allows code to throw values such as strings or null, so the error argument is not guaranteed to have a message property. Normalize or safely inspect it before accessing fields such as error.message.

Make production traces readable

React warns that component names in production stacks may be minified. If readable production traces matter, configure your error-reporting pipeline to decode component stacks with sourcemaps, as it can for ordinary JavaScript stacks. Ensure the maps uploaded to the reporting service correspond to the deployed build; mismatched maps can make decoded output unreliable. React’s guidance is in its Component reference.

Production React builds also omit full error messages to reduce transferred bytes; the React Minified Error Decoder explains how to look up a minified React error. That decoder addresses React error messages, while sourcemaps are the relevant mechanism for making component names and locations in a component stack more legible.

Know which failures an error boundary can catch

A component boundary is not a universal browser error handler. React documents that boundaries do not catch errors from event handlers, server-side rendering, the boundary itself, or ordinary asynchronous callbacks such as setTimeout and requestAnimationFrame. React documents an exception for errors thrown inside a useTransition transition function. Consult the current React Component reference for the details relevant to your React version and rendering setup.

There is also a development-versus-production difference: caught errors bubble to window in development, but not in production. A global browser listener is therefore not a dependable sole path for reporting errors that an error boundary already catches. Log boundary-caught errors through componentDidCatch.

Function components and owner stacks are different cases

Function components still need a boundary

The current React documentation says there is no direct function-component equivalent to componentDidCatch. You can keep a reusable class error boundary in a function-component application or use the react-error-boundary package named in React’s documentation.

captureOwnerStack is not a replacement

captureOwnerStack() reads the Owner Stack in development. React says the Owner Stack differs from the Component Stack available to error handlers and always returns null outside development. For boundary reporting that must work in production, use info.componentStack; see the captureOwnerStack reference.

React Router and server-rendered errors

React Router route modules render the closest route ErrorBoundary, which is framework-level route error handling rather than the same capture point as a component’s componentDidCatch. In Framework Mode, React Router sanitizes server errors before they reach the browser. The browser may receive a generic message without a stack trace, while the original error remains on the server. See React Router’s Error Boundaries guide when deciding where server-side errors should be inspected and reported.
