WizTree, TreeSize Free, and WinDirStat are three good free Windows disk space analyzers, each suited to a different use. WizTree’s publisher says it reads the Master File Table on NTFS drives; TreeSize Free offers a familiar folder-oriented view and PDF reports for personal, non-commercial desktop use; and WinDirStat is the open-source option with file-type statistics and multiple visualizations. These are feature-based recommendations, not results of comparative speed testing.
If you only need a basic cleanup, start with Windows’ built-in tools: Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations can help review what is using space before you install another app.
Which free disk analyzer should you choose?
| App | Best fit | What its publisher documents | Free-use limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| WizTree | Quick NTFS-drive analysis and finding large files | Direct Master File Table reading for NTFS; tree view, treemap, file search, CSV import/export, and duplicate finding. The publisher also describes scans of non-NTFS and network drives. | Free version is for personal use; commercial options are paid. See the WizTree features page. |
| TreeSize Free | A conventional folder structure, visual allocation map, or PDF report | One-click visualization down to file level, a treemap, and PDF reports. | For personal, non-commercial use on desktop systems; not usable on Windows Servers. See the TreeSize Free page. |
| WinDirStat | Open-source software with several ways to explore disk use | Sortable file lists, file-type statistics, interactive treemaps and other graphs, large- and duplicate-file discovery, reports, and cleanup operations. | GPL v3 or later; free for personal and commercial use. See the WinDirStat project site. |
There is no universal speed winner established here: no same-machine comparison was conducted. WizTree’s NTFS scan method is a vendor-documented distinction, not an independent benchmark against TreeSize Free or WinDirStat.
What each app is good at
WizTree: a useful pick for NTFS drives
WizTree’s publisher says it reads the Master File Table directly when scanning NTFS drives, a method it presents as the reason for its speed. Its features include a folder tree, treemap, file search, CSV import and export, and duplicate finding. Choose it if those capabilities match how you want to locate large items, but treat speed claims as the publisher’s description rather than a verified head-to-head result. The free version is restricted to personal use, so check the license before using it on a work device.

TreeSize Free: folder view and PDF reports
TreeSize Free suits readers who prefer to follow a familiar folder structure and want a visual allocation map or PDF report. Its free-edition page lists one-click visualization down to file level and a treemap. The license is for personal, non-commercial desktop use, and the Free edition is not for Windows Servers. Paid TreeSize editions exist; features listed for those editions should not be assumed to be included in TreeSize Free.
WinDirStat: the open-source alternative
WinDirStat combines sortable file details with file-type statistics, interactive treemaps, and other graphs. Its documented capabilities also include finding large or duplicate files, producing reports, and performing cleanup operations. It is licensed under GPL v3 or later and is free for personal and commercial use. Project documentation lists Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 among tested versions, as well as several Windows Server releases; check the project’s current documentation for details.

Because the program exposes file operations, inspect selected items and confirm their purpose before using cleanup features. The app can help show what is taking space; it cannot determine whether a file is safe for you to remove.
How to compare analyzers for your situation
- Scan method: distinguish a documented technique, such as WizTree’s NTFS Master File Table reading, from an independently measured speed comparison.
- How you want to explore: decide whether a folder tree, sortable file list, file-type breakdown, treemap, or reports will make it easiest to identify what matters.
- License and intended use: check whether the free tier permits commercial use and whether it can be used on a server. The three apps have different restrictions.
- Windows support: verify the current publisher documentation for your Windows version, particularly if you use an older release or Windows Server.
- Download source and access: use the official publisher or project route and check its installation guidance. WinDirStat warns about imitation download sites that may offer outdated or modified files.
A safe workflow for finding and freeing space
- Check what is available. File Explorer’s This PC view shows available drive space. You can also open Settings > System > Storage to review Windows’ storage information. Microsoft’s guidance covers Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations.
- Scan with the view that suits the task. Use the analyzer to inspect the largest folders and files. If you are checking duplicates, treat that as a separate task from locating large files: two large files are not necessarily duplicates, and duplicates may be small.
- Verify before removing anything. Open the file’s location and confirm what it is for. Do not delete Windows system folders or unfamiliar application data just because an analyzer shows a large size.
- Use Windows’ cleanup review for cleanup tasks. Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations show categories and estimated savings before you select cleanup. Microsoft warns that deleting the previous Windows installation can remove the ability to return to the prior version.
- Move personal files you want to keep, if appropriate. External storage such as a USB drive or SD card is one option; it is not required to analyze disk use. Microsoft also documents external storage as an option for moving files.
When Windows’ built-in tools are enough
If your goal is simply to review categories of storage and remove items Windows identifies for cleanup, start with Settings > System > Storage rather than installing an analyzer. Microsoft says a PC running low on storage may experience slower performance or trouble installing Windows updates. A dedicated analyzer is more useful when you want to inspect specific folders and files or compare their relative sizes.
