To move Windows 11 taskbar icons to the left, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, then set Taskbar alignment to Left. Choose Center to restore the default centered arrangement. These options change icon alignment, not the taskbar’s physical position on the screen.
Change the taskbar icon alignment
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Open Taskbar alignment and choose Left or Center.
Windows 11 centers taskbar icons by default. Microsoft documents Center and Left as the alignment choices in its taskbar customization instructions.
Open the setting from Start instead
If you prefer to navigate through Settings, go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Expand Taskbar behaviors, then use Taskbar alignment to choose Left or Center. Microsoft documents this route on its Windows taskbar support page.
What Center and Left change
Alignment controls where the taskbar icons are arranged across the taskbar. Choose Left if you prefer the familiar left-aligned layout; choose Center for Windows 11’s default. Microsoft does not claim that either arrangement improves productivity, so the choice is a matter of preference.

Can you move the taskbar to the top or side?
Icon alignment and the taskbar’s physical position are separate settings. Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 Windows 11 24H2/25H2 preview update describes a separate Taskbar position control at Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar position. It offers bottom, top, left, and right positions, but Microsoft says the feature is being introduced through a gradual rollout, so it may not yet appear on every eligible PC.
The same update says the search box and smaller-taskbar options are currently supported only when the taskbar is at the top or bottom. This is a position control, not another choice in Taskbar alignment. See Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview update notes for the rollout details.
