After a Pixel update, start with a restart and check for Android and app updates, then troubleshoot the specific symptom. A little extra battery use during the first few days can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software; persistent drain, overheating, or other glitches need symptom-specific checks. An issue appearing after an update does not by itself prove the update caused it.
Start with the safest checks
- Restart the Pixel. Check whether the symptom remains after the phone starts again.
- Check for updates. Open Settings > System > Software updates to check Android update status. Update apps in the Google Play Store as well; exact menu labels can vary by Android version and model.
- Choose the path that matches the symptom. Use Battery usage for drain, Safe Mode for suspected app problems, network reset for connection trouble, and the update screen for an installation that seems stuck.
Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance recommends basic checks such as restarting and updating before moving to more disruptive steps.
If the battery drains faster than usual
Google says it is normal for a Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual immediately after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes the new software. If the unusual drain continues after a few days, Google advises seeking help rather than assuming it will resolve on a fixed schedule. See Google’s battery-drain guidance.
Check what is using power
- Open the phone’s battery settings and review Battery usage to identify apps or system components consuming power.
- Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled, and install available app updates.
- On Pixel 6 and later, Google lists battery diagnostics as an available check. Availability and labels can vary by device and Android version; see Google’s battery troubleshooting steps.
If the phone feels warm or hot
Warmth can accompany demanding activity such as video, games, media playback, setup, backup restoration, or large data transfers. Charging while doing intensive work can add to the heat. If the phone is excessively hot, disconnect it from power, move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight, and stop using it until it cools. Avoid poorly ventilated spaces.

If the Pixel repeatedly shuts down because of heat, contact Google Pixel support. Google lists temperature diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later; device and software availability may vary. More details are in Google’s overheating guidance.
If apps freeze, the camera misbehaves, or the phone glitches
Test whether a downloaded app is involved
Restart first, then check for Android and app updates. If the issue continues, start the phone in Safe Mode, which temporarily disables downloaded third-party apps. If the symptom disappears in Safe Mode, a downloaded app may be involved; investigate recently installed or updated apps. Keep factory reset as a last resort
Google places a factory reset after other troubleshooting steps. It erases the phone’s data, so back up important information before attempting one. Do not use it as an early response to a minor glitch; first try the reversible checks above. Follow Google’s troubleshooting and reset guidance.
If Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular service stops working
Use the reset option that matches the affected connection: open Settings > System > Reset options, then choose the relevant network reset. Menu wording may differ by model or Android version. If an Android update seems stuck or has not taken effect
- Open Settings > System > Software updates and check the update status.
- Follow any on-screen instructions. A downloaded Pixel Android update installs in the background and becomes active after the phone restarts.
- If a download does not finish, Google says the phone will automatically try again over the following days.
Update schedules vary by device and carrier, and older Pixel devices may not support a newer Android version. A delay or lack of an offered update does not necessarily mean installation has failed. See Google’s Android update information.

Contact Google Pixel support if a symptom persists after the relevant checks, unusual battery drain continues after a few days, or the phone repeatedly overheats or shuts down. Back up before any factory reset: unlike restarting or checking updates, that step erases phone data. These are general Google help steps, not a complete list of bugs for every Pixel model, Android build, carrier, or region, and menu names can change.
