The project requires administrator privileges, and its cleanup options target different parts of memory. This guide applies to that Windows application—not another program named MemoryCleaner.
Confirm the application and get it from an official source
Before changing settings, check that you have Igor Mundstein’s Windows Memory Cleaner (WinMemoryCleaner). The name “MemoryCleaner” alone does not identify a publisher or version. The project describes WinMemoryCleaner as a free, portable Windows application. Its official website links to the project and lists Chocolatey, Scoop, and WinGet as installation routes; the official GitHub repository contains the application’s documentation.
Use the project repository or an installation route linked from the official website. Do not assume a file is authentic simply because it has the same name or icon.
Verify the download before running it
The project instructs users to inspect the downloaded executable’s Digital Signatures tab and verify the signer and timestamp. Compare what Windows displays with the publisher information in the project’s own instructions. This check is useful, but it does not establish that a file is safe in every circumstance or explain every security alert.

If release notes publish a SHA-256 value for the exact release you downloaded, compare the file’s hash with that value. The project recommends this check when a hash is provided; it does not mean every release has a published hash, and no particular release file is independently verified here.
Understand permissions and security warnings
The project says WinMemoryCleaner requires administrator privileges. Some operations run without the main interface (“headless”); the project explicitly says, “You must run these headless operations with administrator privileges.” Grant elevated access only to a copy obtained and checked through the steps above.

The project says its startup integration creates a scheduled task and that this behavior, together with administrator privileges, may contribute to antivirus or SmartScreen warnings. That is the publisher’s explanation, not independent confirmation that a specific warning is harmless. Verify the file and its signer; do not bypass a warning solely because the project describes detections as false positives. An antivirus exclusion weakens protection and should not be a routine setup step.

The project lists minimum Windows versions for operations, but the version numbers are not reproduced here; consult the repository’s current documentation for the operation you intend to use. More free memory after a cleanup does not by itself demonstrate faster performance. The project’s feature descriptions are not independent performance testing.
Start with manual optimization, then consider automation
A cautious first setup is to leave automatic optimization and run-on-startup off, run an intended operation manually, and observe how the PC behaves. This is a prudent staged approach, not a workflow prescribed by the project. WinMemoryCleaner also documents a low-memory trigger, a periodic trigger, a process-exclusion list, low-priority mode, a hotkey, and tray notifications.

- Every X hours: optimization can be triggered by a time interval. Know the interval before enabling it.
- Free physical RAM threshold: optimization can be triggered when free physical RAM drops below a configured percentage. Understand the threshold you choose and when the condition can occur.
- Run on startup: enables the application to run at startup, rather than waiting for you to open it.
- Optimization hotkey: allows a keyboard shortcut to trigger an optimization; choose one you are unlikely to press accidentally.
- Process exclusions: add critical applications where appropriate so they are excluded from the relevant optimization behavior.
- Low-priority mode: lowers the Memory Cleaner process’s own priority; the project notes that optimization may take longer.
- Tray notifications: provide notifications about the application’s activity.
Enable only the automation you need, and retain a clear way to disable it. If a trigger causes unwanted or poorly timed activity, turn that trigger off rather than adding more automatic cleanup.

The project says WinMemoryCleaner stores settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWinMemoryCleaner. Before replacing the application, it recommends exporting those registry settings, stopping the running instance, and retaining a backup of the existing executable. reg export "HKLMSoftwareWinMemoryCleaner" WinMemoryCleaner-reg-backup.regAfter replacing the file, the project recommends checking Event Viewer. Do not treat a successful settings export or a matching hash as proof that a replacement executable is otherwise safe; verify the file and signer as well.
Reset a broken or stuck configuration and inspect logs
If the application is misconfigured or stuck, the project documents running its executable with the /Reset argument. It says this restores factory defaults, closes stuck windows, preserves the language choice, and turns auto-update off. If you want updates, re-enable that setting after the reset.
To view application events, open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and look for source name Windows Memory Cleaner.
Use Windows tools to understand memory behavior
For context before or after an optimization, Windows Resource Monitor can show memory use. The project also names Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer for inspecting process memory use and RAMMap for examining physical-memory allocation and caches. These are diagnostic tools, not requirements for configuring WinMemoryCleaner. The project’s materials do not establish that the utility will improve performance on a particular PC.
