OpenCode sends a prompt to the OpenRouter model selected in its model selector; OpenRouter then handles the gateway-side model or provider choice. A fixed model selection does not automatically choose a model based on what the prompt asks. That behavior requires a router such as OpenRouter Auto Router. Configuration syntax also differs between OpenCode’s current provider guide and its v2 documentation, so use the instructions that match your installed version.
How a prompt travels from OpenCode to an OpenRouter model
- OpenCode stores your OpenRouter credentials. The documented workflow is to create an OpenRouter API key, run
/connectin OpenCode, search for OpenRouter, and enter the key. - You select a model in OpenCode. The current provider guide says many OpenRouter models are preloaded and selectable with
/models. OpenCode v2 documents selectors in the formopenrouter/<OpenRouter model ID>. - OpenCode sends the request through OpenRouter. OpenRouter acts as the gateway to the selected model. Depending on the routing options you configure, provider choice or error recovery may be handled at the gateway.
- The model that handles the request returns a response. For OpenRouter fallback routing, its documentation says the response identifies the model actually used, and pricing is based on that model.
In short, OpenCode manages your credential and selected model; OpenRouter receives the request and applies any gateway-side routing you have enabled. The phrase “coding prompts” does not mean OpenCode itself automatically classifies each prompt and chooses a model.
Connect OpenCode to OpenRouter
- Create an API key with OpenRouter.
- In OpenCode, run
/connect, find OpenRouter, and enter the key. - Run
/modelsand choose an available OpenRouter model. The current OpenCode provider guide says many OpenRouter models are preloaded; it also allows adding models inopencode.json.
See OpenCode’s provider guide for the documented connection workflow. OpenRouter credentials are required for this API-key route.
Choose a fixed OpenRouter model
A fixed selector sends requests to the model you chose, rather than selecting a different model based on the prompt’s complexity or subject. OpenCode v2 gives openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4 as an example. The selector begins with the provider name, openrouter, followed by the full OpenRouter model ID.

In v2, the provider segment ends at the first slash, while the model ID can contain additional slashes. IDs are case-sensitive. A selector can also include an optional #variant. See the v2 model documentation for selector parsing and provider configuration for its provider setup.
Choose who controls routing
Several routing choices can affect a request, but they operate at different layers. An OpenCode provider preference concerns which OpenRouter provider should serve a model; an OpenRouter fallback list concerns what happens when a model attempt fails; Auto Router can choose a model based on the prompt.

| Choice | Who makes the decision | Can it vary between requests? | What happens on an error? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed model selector | You choose a specific OpenRouter model in OpenCode. | Not based on prompt content by itself; the selected model remains fixed unless you change it or configure gateway behavior. | Error handling depends on OpenRouter routing options and the model/provider setup. |
| OpenCode provider preference | You pass a provider-order preference for a model; OpenRouter handles the gateway request. | It specifies a preference, not prompt-based model selection. | Fallback behavior is separate and depends on whether it is enabled and configured. |
| OpenRouter model fallback | OpenRouter follows the configured model priority list. | It can try another listed model after an eligible failure. | OpenRouter documents retries after errors including rate limits, downtime, context-length validation errors, and moderation flags. |
| OpenRouter Auto Router | OpenRouter analyzes prompt complexity, task type, and model capability, then selects a model. | Yes; the selected model can vary with the request. | The router chooses a model for the request; do not assume a particular fallback policy beyond the options documented for your setup. |
The table describes distinct controls: choosing a provider for a selected model does not mean OpenCode is choosing a new model, and an error fallback is not the same as prompt-based model selection.
Set provider preferences or disable fallbacks
The non-versioned OpenCode provider guide shows an OpenRouter per-model configuration with a provider order, for example order: ["baseten"], and an option allow_fallbacks: false. These are configurable choices, not universal defaults: a provider order expresses preference, while disabling fallbacks prevents the corresponding fallback behavior. Consult the current provider guide and use its complete example in the context of your installed configuration.

On OpenRouter’s side, a fallback models list expresses model priority. OpenRouter says it can try the next model after specified errors, and that the response identifies the model used. See OpenRouter’s model fallback documentation for supported behavior. Do not treat an OpenCode provider-order preference and an OpenRouter model fallback list as interchangeable settings.
Use Auto Router for prompt-based model selection
OpenRouter’s openrouter/auto selector is the documented option when you want OpenRouter to choose a model based on prompt complexity, task type, and model capability. OpenRouter says it forwards the request to its chosen model and returns model metadata. Its eligible model pool changes, so a list of candidates should not be treated as a permanent guarantee. Details are in the Auto Router documentation.

Auto Router is different from selecting a fixed model such as openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4: the latter identifies a model, while openrouter/auto delegates model selection to OpenRouter. Use the router only if that variable, prompt-aware choice is what you want.
Check your OpenCode documentation generation before copying configuration
The current, non-versioned OpenCode provider guide and the v2 documentation show different configuration shapes. The current guide uses a provider object and documents /connect and /models; v2 uses providers, describes OpenRouter’s native runtime, and documents selectors such as openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4. These are not interchangeable examples. Confirm which documentation applies to your installed OpenCode version before copying a configuration block.

OpenCode v2 says to retain the native OpenRouter package when overriding its endpoint or using an OpenRouter-compatible gateway, so OpenRouter request and reasoning behavior is preserved. It recommends defining a custom provider when a gateway has its own model inventory and exposes only an OpenAI-compatible API. Refer to the v2 provider documentation for those cases.
