What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Pause before you click or open anything unexpected. Check who sent it, inspect where a link really goes, and verify the request through a website or contact method you already trust. For downloads, confirm you expected the file and got it from a reputable source; treat browser warnings as a reason to stop, not an obstacle to bypass.
How to tell whether a message is trying to rush you
Phishing messages often impersonate a familiar company and invent an account, delivery, or payment problem to make you act quickly. An unexpected invoice, a request to update payment details, an alarming account warning, or an unusually tempting offer should prompt a closer check. A generic greeting can add to the suspicion, but no single clue proves a message is fraudulent. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes these warning signs in its phishing guidance.

Email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024, according to an FTC consumer alert published in April 2025. The alert does not give a percentage for that statement. Its practical advice is direct: “Don’t click links or download attachments in unexpected messages.”

- Check the sender. Compare the sender’s actual email address with the address you would expect from the organization. A familiar display name alone does not verify who sent the message.
- Preview the destination on a computer. Hover over the link without clicking and compare the URL that appears with the link text and the organization it claims to represent. Google notes that a mismatch may mean a link leads to a phishing site in its Gmail phishing guidance.
- Look at the domain carefully. A URL can contain a company name in a path or subdomain while its actual domain belongs to someone else. If the destination is unfamiliar, misspelled, or inconsistent with the claimed organization, do not proceed.
- Verify the request separately. Instead of following a message link, open the organization’s app or type an official address you already know. If you need to contact someone, use a phone number or address from a trusted source—not details provided in the suspicious message.
On a phone or tablet, you may be able to press and hold a link to preview its destination, but the exact behavior depends on the app. If you cannot confidently inspect the destination, do not tap it; go to the organization through its app or a known address instead.

Why HTTPS and a clean browser window are not guarantees
HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and a website; it does not prove that the site is the one you intended to visit or that it is trustworthy. Microsoft advises checking the address-bar URL even when a site has a valid certificate in its Microsoft Edge security guidance.
Likewise, not seeing a browser warning is not proof that a link or file is safe. Browser protections can flag known or suspected threats, but official guidance does not establish that they catch every phishing site or malicious download. Use them alongside independent checks of the sender, destination, and reason for the request.

How to assess a download before opening it
- Ask whether you expected the file. Treat an unexpected attachment or download as suspicious, even if the message appears to come from a familiar person or company. Verify it with that sender using a separate, trusted channel.
- Check the source independently. Download software or documents only from a reputable source you can identify, such as the organization’s official site or app. A link in an unsolicited message is not independent verification.
- Read the browser’s warning. Chrome may classify downloads as dangerous, suspicious, unverified, or insecure. Its download guidance recommends cancelling if a suspicious-file scan remains inconclusive. Do not dismiss a warning just to get the file.
- Do not disable protections on request. A page or message that tells you to turn off browser or security protections so a file can download is a reason to stop, not a reason to comply.
A download can be insecure even if the webpage that started it used HTTPS, Google notes in its Chrome guidance. Check the file and its source, not just the security indicator for the page.
What browser protections can—and cannot—tell you
Chrome Safe Browsing and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen can add useful warnings, but their functions and settings differ. They are screening tools, not a substitute for confirming that a request is expected.

Enhanced warns about potential new dangers and can perform more in-depth checks. Review Google’s Safe Browsing options to understand the protection and data-sharing trade-offs. |
| Microsoft Defender SmartScreen | Microsoft describes warnings for suspicious websites and downloads in its Edge security guidance. | Warnings are a reason to stop and investigate. A lack of a warning does not establish that a site or file is safe. |
These descriptions come from product guidance, not a controlled comparison of detection rates. Keep protections enabled, heed warnings, and independently verify links and downloads.

If you downloaded or ran a file
If harmful software may have been downloaded, update your security software and run a scan, as the FTC advises in its phishing guidance. Avoid opening the file again or following further instructions from the message. If you are unsure whether it ran, treat that uncertainty seriously and seek help from a trusted technical support provider.

If you entered a password or sensitive information
Go directly to the real service—not through the message—and change the exposed password. If you reused it elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Follow the service’s account-recovery process and enable multifactor authentication if available. A security key is one possible second factor; it helps protect account access, but it does not scan links or validate downloads.
