For sharing files between a Windows PC and a Mac, leave the Samsung T7 formatted as exFAT: Samsung says its Portable SSDs ship in exFAT and are recognized by both systems. You do not need to reformat a new T7 just to start using it. Reformat only when you have a specific reason, such as making the drive Mac-oriented with APFS. Formatting erases the selected drive, so back up its contents and confirm you have selected the external T7 before proceeding.

Compatibility can vary on TVs, game consoles, phones, cameras, and other devices. Check the host device’s documentation before choosing a format for it; do not assume that every device supports exFAT or APFS. Samsung T7 product page
Does a new Samsung T7 need formatting?
Usually not. Samsung says its Portable SSDs come formatted as exFAT and are automatically recognized by macOS and Windows. If your goal is ordinary file sharing between those operating systems, you can leave the factory format in place. Samsung Australia Support: Portable SSD Installation
Format or reformat the T7 on a Mac
Use Disk Utility only if you intend to erase or change the drive’s format. Apple warns that erasing a storage device deletes everything on it. Copy any files you need elsewhere before continuing. Apple: Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

- Connect the Samsung T7 and open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
- In Disk Utility, choose View > Show All Devices.
- In the sidebar, select the external Samsung T7 physical storage device. Check the device name and capacity so you do not select your Mac’s internal storage or another disk.
- Click Erase.
- For Scheme, choose GUID Partition Map. Apple specifies this scheme for Intel-based and Apple silicon Macs.
- For Format, choose exFAT for Windows/Mac sharing or APFS for a Mac-oriented workflow.
- Enter a name for the drive, click Erase, and then click Done when the process finishes.

Format the T7 on Windows
Samsung confirms that exFAT is compatible with Windows and macOS, but the exact current Windows formatting screens and labels are not established by the sources cited here. Use Windows’ built-in disk-management or formatting workflow, back up first, verify that the selected external disk is the Samsung T7, and choose the file system you intend to use. A mistaken selection can erase a different drive, so do not proceed unless you can identify the T7 confidently.

Check compatibility and connection expectations
Samsung’s T7 support listing specifies Windows 7 or later and Mac OS X 10.10 or later for the T7 family. Those are the requirements shown on that listing; check current compatibility information for newer or unusual hosts. Samsung T7 support listing
The T7 product page says the drive includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables, so buying another cable is not a default requirement for formatting. Samsung lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps and sequential speeds up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write on its current US support listing.
