Use Google Search Console’s Search results Performance report to monitor how often your site appears in Google Search and how many visits those results bring. Turn on Clicks and Impressions, choose a date range and search type, then use the report’s chart and tables to examine trends or specific queries and pages.
Open the Search results Performance report
- Sign in to Google Search Console and select the property that covers your site. The property must be verified and set up in Search Console.
- In the navigation, open Performance and select Search results. The report’s default view shows clicks and impressions for the past three months.
The report answers Google’s broader question, “How are you performing on Google?” by pairing a trend chart with a table of detailed results. The chart gives an overview; the table lets you investigate a dimension such as queries or pages.
Choose the metrics to track
Use the metric controls above the chart to switch metrics on or off. Start with Clicks and Impressions. Add Click-through rate (CTR) or Average position when they help answer a specific question.
- Clicks: The number of times people clicked your site from Google Search results.
- Impressions: The number of times a result from your site appeared in Google Search results.
- CTR: Clicks divided by impressions. It describes the share of impressions that resulted in a click.
- Average position: The average position of your site’s topmost result. Its calculation depends on the report’s grouping, so compare it only in the context of the same view.
For a basic performance check, look at clicks and impressions together over time. A position figure alone does not explain the full picture; Google’s task guidance recommends paying more attention to trends in clicks and impressions than to position by itself.

Set the date range and search type
Use the report’s date and search-type controls to narrow the data to the period and results you care about. Search type options include Web, Image, Video, and News. For comparisons, choose a period that fits your question—for example, a recent period and a comparable earlier period—and apply the report’s comparison option.
For trend charts, the report can offer hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly granularity, depending on the selected date range and available data. Hourly points in the 24-hour view are useful for a very recent look; weekly or monthly groupings can make longer-term patterns easier to see by smoothing daily fluctuations.

- Queries: See search terms associated with your site’s results. This is useful for understanding which queries are driving visible activity, but the table is not a complete list of searches.
- Pages: Inspect performance attributed to individual canonical URLs. Google generally credits performance data to a page’s canonical URL rather than to a duplicate URL that may have appeared or been clicked.
- Countries and Devices: Segment results by where people searched or the device they used.
- Search appearance: Investigate supported result formats and appearances.
- Dates: Review individual reporting periods within the selected range.
Filters and comparisons can focus the report further—for example, on a particular query, page, country, or device. Remember that filtering does not turn the query table into a complete search log: some queries are omitted for privacy, and the table also displays only its most important rows. A query or URL filter can therefore change totals because of anonymized queries and row limits.

For example, if multiple URLs from the same property appear for one query, property-level aggregation counts the property impression once and uses the topmost result for position. Page-level aggregation counts each unique result URL separately. As a result, page-table impressions, CTR, or average position can differ from the chart’s property totals without indicating an error.
When you report or compare a number, identify whether it came from the property-level chart or a page-level table, and keep the same grouping in comparisons. This matters especially for CTR and average position, whose values depend on how impressions and positions are aggregated.

Export report data or use the API
For a spreadsheet or a one-off share, use the report’s export control to download the displayed chart and table data. The export reflects what is shown in the report; it is not a substitute for a complete list of anonymized queries.
For custom extraction or a recurring workflow, Google documents the Search Console API. Google documents a limit of 50,000 rows per day, per type, per property. The API is free but subject to a usage quota, and it does not support freeform SQL queries. Check the current API documentation for quota details before building an automated pipeline.
