The double triangle identifies insulated hand tools intended for live working under IEC 60900. Beside it, 1 000 V is the standard’s stated working limit for alternating current (AC)—not, by itself, a DC rating or proof that a particular used tool is safe to use. The standard number and other identification marks help you check what the tool is and when it was made.
What the main safety marks mean
Double triangle
The double triangle is the IEC 60417-5216 symbol meaning “Suitable for live working” under the relevant standard. IEC 60900:2018 specifies this symbol for insulated tools covered by the standard. It is a live-working suitability mark, not a decorative logo. IEC 60900:2018 marking text
“1 000 V” beside the symbol
IEC 60900 describes this as the electrical working limit for alternating current. Read it as an AC limit, not as a DC rating. The standard also cautions that other voltage markings, such as a test voltage, can cause a mistaken assumption about the working limit. A separate Intercable catalog describes certain tools as rated for up to 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC; that product-specific statement does not make the 1 000 V mark alone a DC rating. “IEC 60900”
This is the relevant standard number. IEC 60900:2018 specifies that the number be marked adjacent to the double triangle. Seeing the standard number together with the symbol is more informative than seeing “1000 V” alone. IEC 60900:2018 marking text

Other markings that identify the tool
IEC 60900 marking provisions also cover information that helps identify the tool and its maker:
- Manufacturer name or trademark: identifies the maker.
- Model or type reference: helps identify the specific tool; use it to find product-specific documentation.
- Year of manufacture: IEC 60900:2018 allows the year to be represented by at least its final two digits. A “23” may be a year field, but check the maker’s product information if the context is unclear.
- “C”: the standard lists this mark for hand tools designed for extremely low temperature. Do not assign that meaning to an isolated C without considering the surrounding marks and product documentation.

What VDE, GS and handle colors tell you
Manufacturer materials show VDE, GS and other certification marks on particular products, but the reviewed materials do not establish that every logo has the same meaning or that a logo on its own authenticates a specific tool. Red-and-yellow handles are not enough to establish conformity. Look for permanent markings and confirm the product with its maker rather than relying on color, a marketplace title, or a photograph.

Marks do not tell you whether a used tool is safe now
A standards mark describes the tool type and its marking; it cannot reveal whether insulation has since been cut, cracked, contaminated, altered or otherwise damaged. GEDORE’s 2017 VDE Insulated Safety Tools catalog advises: “Before commencing any work, check the insulation for damage.” It also states: “Damaged tools must not be used!” GEDORE VDE Insulated Safety Tools catalog
Do not treat a mark, handle color, listing, or image as an inspection of the tool’s current condition. The markings alone also do not establish what work practices or qualifications a particular electrical job requires.

How to check a pair of insulated pliers
- Read the permanent marks: look for the double triangle, “IEC 60900,” and the adjacent “1 000 V” AC working-limit mark.
- Identify the product: note the manufacturer, model or type reference, and year mark; use the maker’s documentation to resolve unclear codes or certification logos.
- Confirm the rating for the job: check the particular tool’s stated AC or DC rating. Do not infer a DC rating from “1 000 V” alone.
- Inspect the insulation before work: do not use the tool if its insulation is damaged.
