You can connect an external GPU (eGPU) to a mini PC only if that exact model supports a suitable external PCIe connection. Check the mini PC’s specifications first: a USB-C connector—or even USB4 branding—does not by itself guarantee eGPU support. The two common routes are a Thunderbolt or eGPU-capable USB4 enclosure, and an OCuLink dock.
Check whether your mini PC supports an eGPU
Look up the exact model’s specification sheet and manual, then confirm that its specific port supports eGPU use. Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 can provide a suitable connection when the mini PC and enclosure support it. USB4 support is not uniform: GIGABYTE states, “Since USB4 does not require mandatory support for eGPU, implementations may vary across different computer models,” in its AORUS AI BOX Series Initial Setup FAQ dated December 22, 2025. Confirm compatibility with the mini PC maker rather than relying on the port label alone.
Sonnet’s Windows 11 guide offers a product-specific check for its Breakaway Box: on a USB4 system without a Thunderbolt port, look in Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers for “USB4(TM) Host Router (Microsoft).” Sonnet says its Breakaway Box is incompatible if that entry is absent. This check applies to that product guide; it is not a universal guarantee that every system showing the entry supports every eGPU enclosure. Choose the connection path your mini PC actually supports
- Thunderbolt or compatible USB4: Use an enclosure or dock designed for that host connection. For USB4, confirm that the specific mini PC implementation supports eGPU or PCIe tunneling.
- OCuLink: Use an OCuLink dock only if the mini PC has a compatible OCuLink port or a documented supported PCIe route. OCuLink and Thunderbolt/USB4 are different interfaces; a passive cable adapter cannot turn an ordinary USB4 port into OCuLink.
Choose an enclosure or dock and check what it includes
Match the dock’s host connection to the mini PC, then check operating-system support, graphics-card compatibility, card dimensions, slot, power connectors, cable requirements and any vendor-supported driver instructions. A powered enclosure may include the GPU power supply; an open or bare dock may require you to provide a desktop graphics card and a separate ATX or SFX power supply. Check the package contents rather than assuming one product listing covers the whole build.

Manufacturer examples illustrate why model-specific checks matter:
- MINISFORUM DEG2: Its manufacturer page lists a PCIe x16 slot, PCIe 4.0 x4 OCuLink, Thunderbolt 5 upstream, USB, LAN and ATX power connections. For the described MiniPC setup, MINISFORUM says both the included OCuLink and Thunderbolt cables are needed to synchronize power and enable dock ports. Follow the instructions for the intended connection mode and host.
- AOOSTAR EG01 and EG02: AOOSTAR describes the EG01 as OCuLink-only and compatible with ATX/SFX power supplies. Its EG02 adds Thunderbolt 5 ports, so do not assume models in one product family share the same host connection.
- Plugable TBT5-AI: Plugable specifies Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 or eGPU-capable USB4 on the host, and Windows 11. Its product page lists compatible GPU examples and setup troubleshooting. Those requirements describe this enclosure, not every eGPU product.

Connect and set up the eGPU
- Confirm the host and operating system: Check the exact mini PC model, the eGPU capability of the port, firmware or BIOS requirements, and the enclosure’s supported operating systems before assembling anything.
- Prepare the hardware: Confirm the card fits the dock, its slot and power connectors match, and the power supply can meet the GPU’s requirements. Identify whether the dock includes a power supply or needs a separate ATX/SFX unit.
- Connect the dock: For a Thunderbolt or USB4 enclosure, use the manufacturer-specified cable and connect directly to the supported mini PC port. Do not assume any USB-C cable or an intermediary hub will work. Power the enclosure as its manual instructs.
- Handle OCuLink connections cautiously: MINISFORUM says OCuLink generally does not support hot-plugging and instructs owners to shut down before connecting or disconnecting. Follow the manuals for both the mini PC and dock; do not unplug a live OCuLink connection unless the exact hardware documentation explicitly permits it.
- Install the graphics driver: Install the appropriate AMD or NVIDIA driver for the card and operating system, following the dock maker’s current instructions. Some product-specific setups call for driver cleanup or a particular desktop driver, so do not assume the same installation process applies to every enclosure.
- Verify detection: In Windows, open Device Manager > Display adapters and confirm the external card appears without a warning icon. Sonnet gives this as a verification step in its Windows 11 guide; other systems may provide different checks.
- Connect the monitor: When using the eGPU for gaming or GPU-driven display output, connect the monitor to an output on the external graphics card when supported. MINISFORUM recommends this for its OCuLink setup because sending rendered frames back through the mini PC connection adds traffic. Display behavior can vary by application and platform.

Check operating-system support before buying
Do not infer support from the interface name alone. Plugable specifies Windows 11 for the TBT5-AI; that product’s requirement does not establish support for other operating systems or enclosures. For other Windows or Linux combinations, check documentation for the exact mini PC, dock and GPU.

Apple’s cited eGPU guidance applies specifically to Intel Macs with Thunderbolt 3 running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or later, and Apple notes that not every app uses an eGPU. It should not be generalized to current Apple-silicon mini PCs. See Apple’s eGPU guidance.
