Why your PS5 Slim fan may sound loud
Sony says that during some games and applications, the PS5 cooling fan may operate louder than usual while it cools the system. A change in fan noise by itself does not establish that the console has a fault. But do not dismiss noise accompanied by an overheating warning or repeated shutdowns: check the console’s placement and vents, then seek support if the issue remains.

Sony’s noise guidance covers PS5 consoles generally. Its safety guide identified as CFI-71XX gives care and ventilation advice, but the available guidance does not set a Slim-specific noise threshold, operating-temperature limit, or diagnostic test.

Make sure the side and rear air vents are unobstructed. Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console; its CFI-71XX safety guide separately recommends placing it at least 10 cm from a wall. Keep the console off long-fibre carpet or rugs, out of narrow or cramped spaces, and do not cover it with cloth.

Clean accessible dust safely
- Turn off the console and disconnect its AC power cable. Sony says to disconnect the cable from the rear of the system before cleaning.
- Vacuum dust around the vents. Use a low-powered vacuum to remove accumulated dust in and around the air vents. Sony’s CFI-71XX safety guide describes using a handheld vacuum.
- If needed, remove the covers to reach trapped dust underneath. The CFI-71XX guide recommends removing the covers and vacuuming dust trapped underneath. Follow the guide’s care instructions; this is not an instruction to open the chassis, dismantle the fan, or attempt an internal repair.
A suitable low-powered vacuum you already own is enough for this cleaning step; Sony does not specify a product, suction rating, or required purchase. Cleaning accessible dust is not a remedy for a failed fan or persistent overheating.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If the noise or suspected overheating continues after you have checked placement and cleaned accessible dust, contact PlayStation Support. Sony’s noise guidance directs users to support if its suggested steps do not resolve the issue. It does not provide a universal noise limit, a numeric temperature threshold, or a Slim-specific repair procedure, so noise alone is not enough to identify an internal fault.
