There is no verified universal best build for CONTROL Resonant. A strong setup depends on whether you want to stay close and build toward executions or control the fight with supernatural abilities such as Mold Turrets. The recommendations below are starting points, not proven optimal loadouts: your available abilities and Talents depend on the choices you make as you progress.
How combat abilities fit into a build
Dylan Faden fights with the Aberrant, a shapeshifting melee weapon, while supernatural combat abilities and Talents round out his loadout. Remedy describes a loop in which melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, abilities stun enemies and create openings for executions, and executions temporarily increase melee damage. In other words, abilities are not simply an alternative to melee: they can help set up the next close-range attack.
Remedy also describes different supported approaches, including heavy close-range fighting and tactical play with summons such as Mold Turrets. That distinction is a useful starting point for choosing a build, but it does not establish a ranked or universally optimal combination. Remedy’s combat overview explains the intended loop and examples.
Build for heavy close-range pressure
Who this approach suits
Choose this direction if you enjoy deliberate melee attacks, staying near enemies, and turning ability openings into executions. Try a heavier Aberrant form, then look for Talents and passive effects that support melee damage or stagger. The aim is to keep pressure on a target, use abilities to create an opening when needed, and capitalize on it with an execution.

What to adjust
- Start with the melee form whose pace and reach feel comfortable; “heavy” should not mean forcing yourself into an awkward weapon.
- Favor upgrades that reinforce the melee-to-Falter-to-execution rhythm, rather than spreading upgrades across unrelated effects.
- If an encounter feels difficult, first consider whether you need more stagger or a safer opening before committing to another close-range attack.
This is a playstyle-based recommendation, not a claim that a particular weapon wins every matchup. A TechRadar reviewer’s personal example was that a hammer suited him better than his initial spear choice; he also reported that a later flame weapon ability increased damage and Falter output. That experience illustrates how preferences can change as abilities unlock, but it is not a controlled weapon comparison.
Build for tactical ability support
Who this approach suits
If you would rather manage the battlefield than rely mainly on direct melee pressure, pair a comfortable Aberrant form with summon or control abilities. Remedy specifically cites Mold Turrets as an example of tactical play. Since melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, you can still use melee as part of the loop while abilities help apply pressure or influence the fight.
What to adjust
- Use the summon or control ability you have actually unlocked; do not plan around an ability that is not yet available in your run.
- Look for Talents and Artifacts that support the way you use abilities and recover their resource, where those options are available to you.
- Keep a melee form you can use reliably so your build is not dependent on abilities alone.
Remedy says some Resonant rewards branch toward distinct playstyles. The specific abilities and combinations available to you therefore depend on your progression and choices; the official material does not establish a complete launch-version list of optimal pairings. - Distance and tempo: Do you want to close in and act quickly, or create space to use tactical abilities?
- Target pressure: Are you mainly looking to focus one enemy, or would tools that help manage a wider fight suit you better?
- Resource management: Do you enjoy weaving ability use between melee attacks, or would you prefer a setup that relies less on frequent ability activation?
- Preferred payoff: Is a close-range execution loop appealing, or do you value tactical tools that can contribute while you reposition?
Change one part of your setup at a time. If you swap the melee form, ability, and Talents together, it is harder to tell which change made a fight feel better.
How first-run choices affect your build
Resonants are major boss encounters tied to story progression, and defeating one grants a unique ability. Remedy says some rewards offer branching choices that push toward different playstyles, and a first playthrough will not unlock everything. Treat a first-run setup as a set of choices and trade-offs, not a checklist that assumes every ability is available.
New Game Plus opens up more combinations. Remedy says Aberrant upgrades, health and Combat Ability resource improvements, unlocked supernatural combat abilities, Talents, and Artifacts carry forward. Traversal abilities remain tied to story progression. New Game Plus also allows multiple different combat abilities from the same boss to be equipped and adds a fourth Artifact slot; the first-playthrough limit is three. If combat is frustrating regardless of which build you choose, Assist Mode lets you adjust individual combat settings rather than requiring a different playstyle. Remedy lists options including Power Recovery Speed, Incoming Damage, Outgoing Damage, Outgoing Falter, Perfect Dodge Window, Enemy Aggression, and projectile speed. Settings can be changed at any time, and achievements and trophies are not gated behind Assist Mode. You can also choose a preset and fine-tune it, as described in Remedy’s Assist Mode overview.
