Screenshot API Returns 403: Causes and Fixes

A 403 can be an API denial or a 403 from the website being captured. Identify which system returned it before changing keys, account settings, or the target URL.

A screenshot API returning 403 may mean the screenshot service denied your API request, or that the website you asked it to capture returned 403. Those are different failures with different fixes. Check the API response body and headers first, then look for a separate status for the rendered page before changing credentials, billing settings, or the target URL.

First find out which system returned 403

A screenshot involves two requests: your application calls the screenshot provider, and the provider’s renderer loads the target website. A 403 from the provider means the API call was refused. A 403 from the target means the API may have processed your request but the page was forbidden to the renderer. A screenshot showing an error page does not, by itself, prove the API endpoint returned 403.

  1. Inspect the HTTP status and response body from your request to the screenshot API.
  2. Check the response headers and provider request ID, if supplied. Save the request ID for support, but redact credentials.
  3. Look for a provider field or header that reports the final rendered-page status. For example, Screenshot API.net documents X-Page-Status as the status of the final document after redirects.
  4. If the API status is successful but the page status is 403, investigate the target site’s access rules rather than changing your API key.

HTTP 403 generally means access to a resource is forbidden in that service’s context. Google Developers Help describes it as meaning you are not authorized to access the URL. That definition does not identify the specific setting or system responsible for a screenshot failure.

If the screenshot API itself returned 403

Verify the endpoint and request shape

  • Confirm the API hostname and path against the provider’s current documentation; check for a wrong environment, obsolete endpoint, or typo.
  • Confirm the HTTP method and any required content type. Some providers use different authentication formats for GET and POST.
  • Put the key exactly where the documentation for that method requires it. For example, ScreenshotEngine documents Bearer authentication for POST and an api_key query parameter for GET.

Check the key and its restrictions

  • Make sure the key is present, active, and associated with the account or project you intend to use.
  • Check whether account policy restricts the key by source IP, permitted APIs, or other controls. Google Developers Help cites IP whitelisting as one possible cause in its service context; Firebase documents that an API-key restriction allowlist omitting the requested API can cause API_KEY_SERVICE_BLOCKED.
  • Do not paste an API key, Authorization header, or key-bearing URL into logs, tickets, or public support posts. Share a redacted request and the provider’s request ID instead.

Check trial, subscription, and quota state

Open the provider dashboard and check whether the trial or subscription is active and whether usage has reached the account’s limit. Status-code conventions differ: ScreenshotAPI.net documents screenshots_limit_reached and trial_expired as 403 cases, while Screenshot API documents invalid or missing keys as 401 and rate or quota errors as 429. ScreenshotEngine likewise describes authentication errors as 401 and rate limits or quota as 429. Do not infer the cause from 403 alone; use the provider’s error code and account page.

If the target website returned 403

The API key authorizes your call to the screenshot service; it does not necessarily sign the renderer into the target website. ScreenshotEngine explicitly distinguishes API authentication from access to the target page. For a target-page denial:

  • Inspect the final URL after redirects. A public URL may redirect to a restricted route, regional version, or login page.
  • Check whether the page requires a logged-in session, access granted by a network or allowlist, or another authorized route available to the renderer.
  • Use only access methods you are authorized to use. If the target site blocks automated access, consult its owner or use an approved integration; repeatedly changing screenshot API credentials will not grant page access.
  • Compare the result with a normal browser session from an authorized network, while remembering that the renderer may not share that browser’s cookies, IP address, or session.

Why one provider’s fix may not work for another

Providers do not assign the same meaning to every status. The examples below are documented behaviors, not universal rules.

Provider documentation Documented behavior What it means for diagnosis
Screenshot API Invalid or missing key: 401; rate or quota errors: 429. A 403 there should not automatically be treated as a key or quota error.
Screenshot API.net X-Page-Status reports the final target document status after redirects; a target 401 or 403 may mean the image is a login or error page. Separate the API response from the rendered page status.
ScreenshotAPI.net screenshots_limit_reached and trial_expired are documented 403 cases. Check the provider’s error code and account state.
ScreenshotEngine Authentication errors are described as 401; rate limits and quota as 429. GET and POST use different documented authentication shapes. Verify both method and credential placement.

Retry only when the error may clear on its own

A permissions denial, invalid key, expired trial, or exhausted quota is usually not fixed by sending the same request repeatedly. Correct the underlying setting or wait for the account’s documented reset. For a transient 429, follow that provider’s retry instructions and any retry-related headers; use bounded retries with a delay rather than a tight loop. Do not treat every 403 as a transient rate limit.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a screenshot API that reports whether a result was a bot check, blank page, failed load, or cache hit, ScreenshotNeo returns that information in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.

What to send support when the cause is still unclear

Send the provider name, endpoint and HTTP method, a sanitized request with secrets removed, the response status and error body, relevant response headers, request ID, and whether the rendered-page status differs from the API status. Include the target URL only if you are permitted to share it. Never send the API key or authorization header.
