Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo highlight visual regression differences, compare a current screenshot with an approved baseline, then inspect the result as an overlay, side-by-side view, or rapid alternation. In Playwright, toHaveScreenshot() can perform the comparison; stabilize the capture and filter only irrelevant dynamic content before adjusting its comparison threshold.
What a visual regression diff shows
A visual regression test compares a screenshot from the current build with an approved baseline. The difference image or review interface helps locate changed pixels; it does not decide by itself whether a change is a defect. A changed area may reflect an intended redesign, a layout regression, missing content, or capture noise.
For useful comparisons, keep the page state consistent across runs: use the same viewport, browser and test data where possible. Then review the highlighted region in context before deciding whether to fix the UI or approve a new baseline.
Choose a view that makes the change clear
Overlay
An overlay places the current screenshot against the baseline so the changed area remains visible in page context. Chromatic’s Diff Inspector offers a unified “1 Up” view and highlights changes in neon green. Chromatic Diff Inspector documentation.

Side by side
A split view makes it easier to understand the surrounding layout and distinguish a shifted element from changed text, a missing asset, or a broader change. Chromatic calls its split view “2 Up,” with changes highlighted in the new snapshot. Chromatic Diff Inspector documentation.
Strobing
Rapidly alternating between baseline and current image can reveal small movements that are hard to notice in a static view. Chromatic calls this diff strobing or “party mode.” Chromatic Diff Inspector documentation.
Highlight differences with Playwright
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a screenshot against a stored snapshot. Its screenshot comparison options let you control per-pixel color tolerance and the maximum number of differing pixels. Playwright also captures until two consecutive screenshots match before saving the last capture, which helps avoid comparing an unstable intermediate frame. It cannot eliminate every source of environmental variation. Playwright visual comparisons and PageAssertions API.

- Make the test repeatable. Hold the viewport, browser and test data steady where possible, and ensure the page has reached the intended state.
- Capture and compare. Use
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot()in a Playwright test. Review the generated comparison when the assertion fails. - Inspect in context. Use an overlay to locate a changed area, side-by-side images to understand the surrounding layout, or strobing to spot subtle shifts.
- Reduce irrelevant volatility. Hide or filter genuinely dynamic content during capture rather than immediately loosening the comparison settings.
- Set tolerances deliberately. Tune the threshold and any differing-pixel limit against representative changes in your UI.
- Approve intended changes. If the visual change is expected and reviewed, update snapshots with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots.
Control pixel tolerance without hiding regressions
Playwright’s threshold controls the acceptable perceived color difference between corresponding pixels in YIQ color space. The documented default is 0.2; zero is stricter and one is more permissive. maxDiffPixels is a separate control: it limits how many pixels may differ. The threshold determines when an individual pixel counts as different; the pixel limit constrains the total tolerated differences. Playwright PageAssertions API.

When a visual review service fits better
Playwright provides a framework-native assertion and comparison workflow. Chromatic’s Playwright integration captures page archives during tests, uploads them for snapshots and pixel diffing, and provides review in its cloud app. Its Diff Inspector supports overlay, split and strobing views. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its capture options include choosing a viewport, waiting for page conditions, and taking full-page screenshots; its consent and widget cleanup can remove cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

The diff is hard to interpret
Switch views: overlay for locating the change, side by side for page context, and strobing for small shifts. If the test passes after broad masking, verify that the masked region does not contain meaningful UI.
The baseline no longer matches an intended design
Review the current screenshot and confirm the change is expected before updating snapshots. Playwright documents npx playwright test --update-snapshots for that update workflow. Do not use snapshot updates to silence an unexplained failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a highlighted difference mean the UI is broken?
No. A diff marks visual change; review it to determine whether it is a defect, an intended update, or capture noise.
What is the difference between threshold and maxDiffPixels in Playwright?
Threshold sets tolerated color variation for an individual pixel; maxDiffPixels limits the total number of differing pixels.
