Test a representative set of real iOS and Android configurations, not every phone on the market. Start with a risk-based device matrix, use simulators and emulators for fast feedback, and verify important or hardware-sensitive flows on physical devices. Add automated runs on a managed service or local lab when broader coverage or parallel execution is worth the cost and operational effort.
Build a device matrix around your app’s risks
A useful matrix is a deliberate sample of the configurations your app supports and your users rely on. Begin with the product’s platform and OS support commitments, then add dimensions that could change behavior or rendering:
- Platform and OS: iOS or Android, plus OS versions relevant to your support policy and user base.
- Device and display: model or vendor, screen size, density, and orientation. Include layouts where text, navigation, or controls could behave differently.
- Locale and user settings: languages, date and number formats, and any accessibility or display settings your app supports.
- App and device state: permissions, notifications, background and foreground transitions, fresh installation, and upgrade paths.
- Connectivity and hardware: network conditions and the sensors, radios, or other capabilities your app actually uses.
Firebase Test Lab describes a device configuration using model, OS version, orientation, and locale. Those are a practical starting set of matrix columns, not a reason to test only those dimensions. Track each combination alongside the coverage method: automated run, manual session, or production monitoring. A handful of flagship devices is not exhaustive coverage.
Choose combinations by impact and likelihood
Prioritize configurations where a defect would affect a critical user journey, where the app depends on OS- or hardware-specific behavior, or where your audience and support commitments make the configuration important. Keep a small smoke set for every change, then broaden the matrix for release candidates or changes that touch sensitive areas. Avoid testing every possible combination: the number of combinations can grow quickly, while many combinations add little risk reduction.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android.You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Use simulators and emulators for fast development feedback
Run a short, repeatable smoke set locally while developing. It should cover launch, authentication or the main entry flow, the app’s primary task, and at least one representative error or permission path. Local virtual devices are convenient for quick UI, navigation, and regression checks because they are readily available to developers and support repeatable runs.
Passing in a virtual device does not establish that the same flow works on physical hardware. Google cautions that physical-device testing can reveal issues that do not occur in Android Studio emulators. Validate device-dependent behavior on real devices, especially before release or when investigating a hardware-specific report.
Use physical devices for device-dependent behavior and investigation
Physical-device testing is most valuable where hardware, OS behavior, rendering, or a specific device configuration could change the outcome. A small local inventory can make frequent hands-on checks convenient; a managed cloud can add breadth without requiring you to own and maintain a large collection. A hybrid approach often fits teams that need a few devices every day and wider compatibility checks periodically.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
For a manual investigation or bug report, capture enough context to reproduce the result:
- Exact device model and OS build.
- App build and account state.
- Locale, network conditions, and relevant permissions or settings.
- Steps to reproduce, expected result, and actual result.
- Logs and screenshots, plus video where the test environment provides it.
A single locally owned phone is useful for a targeted reproduction or spot check, but it provides narrow coverage. AWS describes remote sessions on physical phones and tablets as useful for manual testing, visual rendering checks, install and upgrade sequences, and reproducing issues on a particular device.
Automate the repeatable paths, then inspect failures
Automate stable, high-value journeys so they can run repeatedly across your selected matrix. Use unit and component tests for fast logic feedback; use platform-native UI tests where they fit; and choose cross-platform UI automation when shared workflows justify the framework’s maintenance cost. Keep tests deterministic: assert meaningful outcomes and avoid timing assumptions or incidental layout details that make runs brittle.

Google documents XCTest/XCUITest and Android test workflows for Firebase Test Lab, as well as Robo tests that explore an Android UI without user-authored test code. AWS Device Farm documents Appium, Android instrumentation, XCTest, XCTest UI, and a built-in fuzz test. Those options establish supported workflows in the providers’ documentation; they are not an independent ranking of test quality.
Preserve execution artifacts so a failed test can be tied to its exact configuration. Firebase’s Android guide describes test summaries with test-specific screenshots and videos, raw logs, and app failure details. AWS documents parallel automated execution. Confirm what artifacts, concurrency, and framework versions are actually available in the service and plan you intend to use.

- Run fast local checks. Execute unit or component tests and the short smoke set on the relevant simulators or emulators.
- Run automated matrix checks. Select the models, OS versions, orientations, and locales that cover the changed code and your highest-priority risks.
- Manually inspect critical or device-sensitive flows. Use physical devices for rendering, hardware behavior, upgrade paths, and issues not represented reliably by virtual devices.
- Triage by configuration. Review status, logs, screenshots, video where available, and device metadata; reproduce a failure on the same configuration before broadening the investigation.
- Record coverage and gaps. Keep a record of what was tested, how it was tested, and which supported configurations remain unverified.
Choose a local lab, a cloud service, or a hybrid
A local device lab gives a team direct control and can suit repeated hands-on checks, privacy constraints, specialized peripherals, or a need for predictable access. It also means buying, charging, updating, maintaining, and sharing devices. A managed service can provide remote access and broader sampling without operating a large physical inventory, but it introduces service-specific limits and recurring cost.

| Option | What provider documentation describes | Potential fit | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Studio Emulator and local iOS simulators | Local virtual devices for development feedback. Google recommends local runs before cloud tests for iOS and notes that physical devices can reveal Android issues absent in emulators. | Fast iteration and repeatable early checks. | Whether required sensors, radios, hardware behavior, and OS images are represented. |
| Firebase Test Lab | Android and iOS test infrastructure, selected device configurations, test matrices, XCTest/XCUITest, Robo tests, and console or CLI initiation. | Teams already using Firebase that need managed runs during the transition period. | Google says executions will be supported only until September 30, 2027; plan a migration rather than treating it as a long-term unchanged option. |
| Google Cloud Developer Device Platform | Google’s named replacement for Test Lab, with Device Run, Device Streaming API, and a device catalog. | Teams planning a move from Test Lab or building Google Cloud-native device orchestration. | Billing is required. Google states that pricing will match Firebase Test Lab rates through April 30, 2027; confirm terms after that date before budgeting. |
| AWS Device Farm | Physical Android, iOS, and Fire OS devices; managed automated runs; interactive remote access; and documented Appium, Android instrumentation, XCTest, XCTest UI, and fuzz options. | AWS-oriented teams seeking service-side parallel runs or interactive reproduction. | AWS documentation states the service is available only in us-west-2. Confirm current inventory, framework versions, quotas, data handling, and pricing. |
| BrowserStack App Live and mobile cloud | Vendor documentation describes interactive real-device testing, multi-device sessions, app sources, local testing, logs, and manual and parallel testing. BrowserStack’s product page claimed more than 3,000 real devices and browsers in 2026; that vendor-published count is not independently audited and can change. | Teams considering a commercial real-device cloud or quick manual sessions. | Check plan-specific device availability, parallel sessions, features, and current commercial terms. |
The service descriptions above reflect provider documentation, not independent quality testing or a neutral benchmark. For any candidate, compare:
- iOS and Android coverage, exact models and OS builds, and real versus virtual devices.
- Native and cross-platform framework support, manual sessions, and scripted automation.
- Concurrency, queue times, CI integration, and available results and artifacts.
- Access to local or staging networks, regional availability, and device features.
- Permissions, data retention, security requirements, and total cost, including device ownership or subscription and concurrency charges.
Plan for Firebase Test Lab’s transition
Google’s migration FAQ, last updated October 1, 2026, says Firebase Test Lab executions will be supported until September 30, 2027, and identifies Google Cloud Developer Device Platform as the replacement. Google also says billing must be enabled for the replacement platform and that pricing will match Firebase Test Lab rates through April 30, 2027. These are dated policy details, so recheck Google’s official migration FAQ before choosing a migration date or setting a budget. The replacement’s post-match pricing should not be assumed from the stated rate-matching period.
If Test Lab is part of your current workflow, inventory how tests are initiated, which device configurations are relied on, how results enter CI, and which artifacts developers use for triage. Evaluate the replacement against those needs before the support deadline rather than waiting until the last run.

Troubleshoot common cross-device testing problems
- A test passes in an emulator but fails on a phone. The virtual device may not reproduce the relevant hardware or OS behavior. Run the same steps on a physical device and record its exact model, OS build, settings, and app build.
- A failure cannot be reproduced by another tester. The report may omit a configuration detail. Capture account state, locale, permissions, network, installation or upgrade path, and exact reproduction steps along with the model and OS build.
- A matrix run fails without a clear cause. Map the failed test to its specific device configuration and inspect the logs, screenshots, video, and app failure details the service provides. Rerun the affected case on the same configuration before changing the matrix.
- Automated UI runs are inconsistent. Review for timing-dependent assertions and incidental layout checks. Make the test wait for meaningful states and assert stable user-visible outcomes rather than relying on fixed delays where possible.
- Cloud execution is slow or unavailable for a desired device. Queue time, concurrency, regional availability, inventory, and plan limits vary by provider. Check the service’s current constraints, reduce unnecessary matrix combinations, or keep essential daily checks on local devices.
- A cloud service cannot reach a staging system. Verify whether the provider supports local or private-network access and whether the required network setup is permitted by your security policy before adopting it.
- A Test Lab migration or budget assumption no longer fits. Recheck Google’s current migration and pricing terms. The stated rate match for Developer Device Platform runs only through April 30, 2027, and executions on Firebase Test Lab are supported only through September 30, 2027.
Or skip the browser setup for mobile web surfaces
For a website or web view that is part of a mobile experience, ScreenshotNeo can capture the web surface through one API request. It does not replace testing a native app across device models, OS versions, or hardware. Its role is narrower: capture the website or web content you want to inspect without setting up a browser capture workflow.
Use an API key from your ScreenshotNeo account. The API accepts a URL and returns a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. The cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API parameters and options. Python version:
Quick Recap
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js version using the built-in fetch API:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));
ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
