For many teams building end-to-end tests, Playwright is a practical starting point because its official runner combines cross-browser support, auto-waiting, assertions, tracing, and parallel execution. Selenium and Puppeteer may fit better when your existing ecosystem or browser-control task points to them. None is a universal winner.
What browser automation is—and what this guide covers
Browser automation uses code to control a browser: opening pages, interacting with controls, reading page state, and checking results. Developers and QA engineers commonly use it for end-to-end tests and scripted browser interactions. The workflow below focuses on tests of user-visible behavior, particularly in local development and CI. It does not establish a recipe for production scraping, CAPTCHA handling, RPA, or every agent-controlled workflow.
A useful end-to-end test follows a user-relevant path and checks an observable result—for example, submitting a form and confirming the confirmation message appears. It should not rely on internal implementation details or on a delay that merely gives the page time to change.
Playwright, Selenium, or Puppeteer: which should you choose?
There is no documentation-backed benchmark here that proves one framework is best for every workload. Compare the capabilities relevant to your project rather than treating the names as a ranking.

How do I automate a browser with Playwright?
This small TypeScript example creates a page in memory, fills a labeled field, clicks a button, and waits for a visible status message. It demonstrates a complete test without requiring a separate application server. For your own end-to-end test, replace the in-memory page setup with navigation to your application and exercise a real user journey.

1. Install Playwright and the browser
With Node.js and npm available, create a project and install Playwright Test:
mkdir browser-test
cd browser-test
npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install chromium
Save the following as example.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('shows a greeting after the visitor submits a name', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setContent(`
<label for="name">Name</label>
<input id="name">
<button>Continue</button>
<p role="status"></p>
<script>
document.querySelector('button').addEventListener('click', () => {
document.querySelector('[role="status"]').textContent =
'Welcome, ' + document.querySelector('#name').value;
});
</script>
`);
await page.getByLabel('Name').fill('Sam');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Continue' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toHaveText('Welcome, Sam');
});
Run the test with:
npx playwright test example.spec.ts
The role, label, and status locators describe elements in user-facing terms. The web-first assertion waits for the expected text instead of checking immediately and assuming the page has already updated. Playwright’s guidance recommends user-visible behavior and retrying assertions. Playwright Best Practices

2. Replace the fixture with your application
For an application test, navigate to the page under test, then locate and operate controls using accessible roles, labels, placeholders, or a test ID where appropriate. Assert a meaningful result: a confirmation, changed account state, or destination page. Keep each test’s data and browser state independent so that one test’s cookies, storage, or records do not affect another.
3. Add browser engines intentionally
Playwright can target Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as branded Chrome or Edge channels in appropriate configurations. A focused first install can use Chromium as above; add other engines when the project’s test matrix calls for them, using npx playwright install to install the required browsers. The browser engines have meaningful distinctions: Playwright’s WebKit build is based on upstream WebKit and is not branded Safari; its Firefox build is patched; bundled Chromium can be ahead of stable branded releases. If policy, real-browser behavior, or media codecs require branded Chrome or Edge, select the appropriate channel rather than assuming a bundled build is interchangeable. Playwright Browsers

How do I stop flaky browser tests?
Flakiness often comes from tests that depend on timing guesses, hidden implementation details, or state left by another test. Use these practices to make the condition under test explicit:
- Wait for a real condition. Prefer Playwright’s locator actions and web-first assertions, which wait for the relevant element or expected state, over fixed sleeps and immediate state checks.
- Use meaningful locators. Target a role and accessible name, a label, or a placeholder when those reflect the interface. Use a test ID when a stable test-specific hook is needed.
- Isolate state. Give tests independent data, cookies, and storage. Playwright describes a fresh browser context for each test as equivalent to a new browser profile.
- Assert user-visible outcomes. Check what a person would observe rather than coupling the test to internal implementation details.
- Keep cross-browser scope deliberate. Run the engines needed to catch the project’s risks; do not assume a WebKit build is branded Safari or that bundled Chromium is always identical to stable Chrome.
These practices follow Playwright’s recommendations for test design and browser contexts. Playwright Best Practices · Playwright overview

How should browser automation work in CI?
CI needs a reproducible pairing of the framework package and browser binaries. Playwright versions require specific browser binaries, so after updating the package, rerun its browser installation command. In a CI job, install only the browser engines required by the test matrix, and make sure the job installs the matching binaries before it runs tests. Playwright Browsers
When a test fails, use a trace to inspect what happened rather than adding arbitrary waits. Playwright’s trace viewer can show a timeline with DOM snapshots and network requests, which helps identify whether the page did not reach the expected state or the test interacted incorrectly. Recording traces for every test can be performance-heavy, so use a trace policy suited to CI diagnosis rather than enabling it without considering the cost. Playwright Best Practices
Common browser-automation problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright cannot find or launch its browser after a package update. | The installed browser binaries may not match the Playwright version. | Run npx playwright install after updating the package. In CI, install the engines the test matrix needs. Playwright Browsers |
| A test fails intermittently while waiting for a page update. | The test may be using a timing guess or checking state before it appears. | Use a locator action and a web-first assertion for the expected user-visible state; inspect a trace if the failure remains unclear. Playwright Best Practices |
| Tests pass alone but interfere with each other in a run. | Shared records, cookies, or storage can leak state between tests. | Isolate test data and browser state; Playwright’s fresh-context model provides a separate browser profile for each test. Playwright documentation |
| Puppeteer installs without the expected Chrome binary. | A package manager may block lifecycle scripts that normally download compatible Chrome. | Follow Puppeteer’s documented manual browser-binary installation procedure for that situation. Puppeteer documentation index |
| Cross-browser results differ from a branded browser users run. | A bundled browser build may not match branded-browser policy, behavior, or codecs. | Identify the requirement and configure a branded Chrome or Edge channel where appropriate; for Safari-specific needs, account for the fact that Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari. If the task is to capture a page—not to test a multi-step interaction—you can use ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes one GET request to return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, save this as a shell command, replacing the example URL with the page to capture:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL, captures a clean shot by accepting cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and any MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This is a capture service, not a replacement for browser automation that must exercise and verify an interactive user journey. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
What to decide before you start
- Choose a framework based on your language, required browser engines or branded channels, and whether you want an integrated test runner.
- Define the user-visible result each end-to-end test must verify and isolate its data and browser state.
- Keep framework and browser versions aligned in local development and CI; inspect traces to diagnose failures instead of papering them over with delays.
- Use a screenshot API when the job is page capture, and a browser-automation framework when the job requires interactive testing.
