How to Export Code from Selenium IDE

Right-click a Selenium IDE test or suite, choose Export, select an available target, and download the generated WebDriver source. Here’s what to expect and how it differs from result export.

To export WebDriver code from Selenium IDE, open the project, right-click the test or suite, choose Export, select a language/framework shown in your installed version, then click Export. The browser downloads a source file. This creates code from the IDE steps; it does not export test-run results.

Export a test or suite to WebDriver code

  1. Open the Selenium IDE project that contains the test.
  2. In the test list, right-click the individual test or suite you want to export.
  3. Choose Export from the context menu.
  4. Select a target language and framework available in that installation.
  5. Click Export. Find the generated source file in your browser’s download directory.

The Selenium IDE Code Export guide also describes an optional origin-tracing setting that adds comments connecting generated code to the IDE step that produced it. If that option appears in your version, enable it when reviewing or debugging how the recording maps to code. Selenium IDE Code Export guide.

Which languages and frameworks can you choose?

The Code Export guide documents C# NUnit, Java JUnit, JavaScript Mocha, and Python pytest. A separate plugin-support page identifies Java JUnit, JavaScript Mocha, Python pytest, and C# xUnit. These official documentation pages are dated 2019 and conflict about the C# framework, so they are not a reliable compatibility matrix for every current installation. Use the targets actually shown in your IDE’s Export menu. Code Export Plugin Support.

  • Language: the language your team maintains.
  • Test framework: whether your project uses the listed runner, such as pytest, Mocha, JUnit, or NUnit.
  • Runtime compatibility: whether the generated code can be adapted to your current runtime and Selenium dependencies.
  • Customization: whether built-in output is sufficient or you need a plugin to generate a specialized format.

What the exported file does—and does not—include

Code Export generates WebDriver source corresponding to IDE steps. It can be useful for understanding how recorded actions map to WebDriver calls or for adapting a recording into a project. Do not assume the downloaded file is a complete, ready-to-run application: you may need to create or update the project structure, dependencies, configuration, and test setup yourself.

The export guide contains historical project and dependency examples, but those examples date to 2019 and should not be treated as current dependency recommendations. Set up versions compatible with the runtime and Selenium version your project uses.

Code export versus test-result export

These are different operations. Use the context-menu Export workflow for source code. The Selenium IDE command-line runner has separate --output-directory and --output-format options for writing execution results, including Jest/JSON or JUnit/XML output. If you need a report of a run rather than editable WebDriver source, use the runner’s result-output options instead. Command-line Runner documentation.

When built-in export targets are not enough

Selenium IDE plugins can augment an existing export language or add a new one. The documented plugin route involves development: plugins declare language IDs or vendor entries and respond to export events with generated content. It is not a point-and-click setting for end users. Since the plugin documentation is dated 2019, verify that its API is compatible with the Selenium IDE version you use before building an extension. Troubleshooting export

Export is missing from the context menu

Confirm that you right-clicked a test or suite in the project’s test list. The documented procedure starts from that context menu; it is not the same as exporting run results from the command-line runner.

The target language or framework is not listed

Available targets can vary by installed version, and the official pages do not agree on all C# framework support. Check the menu in your installation rather than assuming every documented target is present. A custom target may require plugin development.

You cannot find the downloaded code

Check the browser’s download list and configured download directory. Selenium IDE sends the generated source file to the browser for download.

The generated file does not run as a complete test project

Export produces WebDriver source, not necessarily all project scaffolding and dependencies. Add it to a compatible project, configure the relevant test framework, and review the generated code against your current Selenium and runtime versions.

You expected a report instead of source code

Use the command-line runner’s result-output options for execution reports rather than the IDE’s Code Export workflow.

If you need a screenshot of a page rather than WebDriver source from Selenium IDE, ScreenshotNeo takes one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools.
