Browser reconnects can reduce proxy requests only when they let your workflow resume a still-running browser instead of repeating navigation or authentication. They do not inherently reduce traffic, and no percentage savings are established. Measure proxy requests or charges against a fresh-session run of the same workload before claiming a reduction.
What a browser reconnect can—and cannot—save
A reconnect hands a new client connection to a browser process that is still running. If the existing page and session state are intact, the next step may avoid browser startup, reauthentication, or reloading pages. Any proxy benefit comes from requests those repeated steps would otherwise have made.
Reconnects do not reduce every kind of proxy usage. A page may continue loading resources while the client is disconnected, and a reconnect alone does not prove that fewer requests went through the proxy. Browserless documents reconnect workflows and their lifecycle constraints, but does not publish a measured proxy-savings figure. See its browser reconnect example.
Choose between a live reconnect and persisted browser state
Reconnect when the same live page matters
Use a bounded handoff when the next task needs an open page, in-memory form input, or another part of the existing live browser process. If the browser process stays alive, a new client can continue from that state rather than recreating it.

Persist state when the next task does not need the old page
Browserless documents persistence for cookies, localStorage, and cache across browser restarts in an isolated user data directory. Its processKeepAlive grace period keeps the process alive for restoring live state; after that period, a new process starts, so the old open pages and in-memory state are gone even if durable browser data returns. The documented process keep-alive feature requires Puppeteer browser.disconnect() and is marked Puppeteer-only. See Browserless’s state-persistence documentation.
Implement a reconnect with the session method that fits your client
BAP reconnect for Puppeteer or Playwright
Browserless’s BAP workflow calls reconnect() while the session is active, then uses a returned endpoint to connect again. The browserWSEndpoint can be used with Puppeteer or Playwright; other returned endpoints are intended for BrowserQL, DevTools, or page-level CDP. Follow the endpoint and client-specific instructions in the BAP reconnect guide.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Returned endpoints omit the API token. Authenticate each subsequent connection with your token, keep endpoints and credentials secret, and do not log bearer credentials. The BAP documentation gives a default reconnect timeout of 30,000 milliseconds; requested timeouts are bounded by the plan’s maximum session duration. If the handoff chain must continue, reconnect again from each new connection, then close the session when finished.
Standard Sessions: Puppeteer-only disconnect pattern
The separately documented Standard Sessions pattern uses the Browserless.reconnect CDP command and Puppeteer’s browser.disconnect() to detach without terminating the remote browser. Browserless says this pattern does not support Playwright because Playwright does not expose disconnect(). Do not assume the Standard Sessions and BAP workflows are interchangeable; use the method documented for your session type and client. See Standard Sessions.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Bound the wait and account for its cost
A browser waiting for reconnection continues to bill and occupies a concurrency slot. Browserless documentation says reconnect timeouts are constrained by the plan’s maximum session duration. Keep the wait no longer than the interruption requires, and close sessions on both success and failure. Exact costs, limits, maximum durations, and feature availability depend on the current account and product terms; verify them in the current documentation before deploying.
As Browserless puts it in its Create a browser session documentation: “A session waiting on a human is still a session that bills, so keep the wait bounded and close in a finally.”

Test whether reconnects actually reduce proxy use
- Define a representative workload. Include the navigation, authentication, waiting, and page actions your production job normally performs.
- Run a fresh-session baseline. Record proxy-provider request counts or charges, repeated navigations, session duration, and failures.
- Run the same workload with a reconnect. Keep the target, inputs, browser settings, proxy configuration, and workload constant.
- Compare the results. Track requests or charges avoided, reconnect wait time, reconnect success, and any extra session cost or concurrency use.
- Repeat enough to account for variability. Do not turn one run or a vendor demonstration into a general percentage claim; report the workload and conditions alongside any measured result.
Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
- Authentication fails on the returned endpoint: the endpoint does not include the API token. Supply valid authentication on every new connection, and avoid exposing credentials in logs.
- The reconnect window expires: the browser may no longer be available, or the requested timeout may exceed the plan’s maximum session duration. Shorten the handoff gap or verify the account’s current duration limit.
- The page is gone after reconnection: the remote process may have ended. Persisted cookies or localStorage can restore durable state, but cannot restore an old live page or in-memory inputs after the process has restarted.
- Playwright cannot use the documented Standard Sessions flow: that specific pattern depends on Puppeteer’s
browser.disconnect(). Use the BAP reconnect method where applicable or choose a supported Puppeteer workflow. - Reconnect works but proxy usage is unchanged: the workflow may still load the same resources, or the avoided setup may account for little of the traffic. Use request and charge measurements to identify what changed.
- Sessions remain active unexpectedly: ensure cleanup runs after success, errors, and timeouts. Bound the wait and close remote sessions so they do not continue billing or occupying concurrency.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean capture of a page rather than continuing an interactive browser session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
