A custom WordPress theme can cost a few thousand dollars for a limited build or more than $80,000 for complex work. There is no dependable single “market price”: estimates vary with what counts as custom, how many templates and editing tools are included, and whether the project involves WooCommerce, integrations, migration, or original design.
2026 planning ranges for a custom WordPress theme
The figures below are USD estimates published by US-facing practitioner guides and a provider. They are useful for early budgeting, not guaranteed quotes or a representative industry survey. Their project tiers are not defined identically, so treat them as separate estimates rather than averaging them into a precise typical price.
| Project type | Published estimate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Simple custom theme | $3,000–$10,000 | Broad planning band from estimates by Raja Aman Ullah and AvyaTech; each guide uses its own scope assumptions. Ullah, 2026; AvyaTech, 2026. |
| Mid-complexity content site | $8,000–$25,000 | Combined span of the two guides’ differing estimates, not a market average. Ullah, 2026; AvyaTech, 2026. |
| Complex commerce or enterprise | $20,000–$80,000+ | Guides put complex work at $20,000–$50,000+ and $25,000–$60,000, with the latter estimating $60,000+ for enterprise and citing work up to $80,000+. AvyaTech, 2026; Ullah, 2026. |
For a more specific view of the published estimates, Ullah’s 2026 practitioner guide gives $5,000–$10,000 for simple themes, $10,000–$25,000 for mid-complexity content sites, $25,000–$60,000 for complex commerce, and $60,000+ for enterprise. The author describes these as estimates informed by quotes and bids, not a representative study. AvyaTech’s 2026 guide estimates $3,000–$8,000 for simple, $8,000–$20,000 for mid-complexity, and $20,000–$50,000+ for complex work.
A separate provider advertises $690 for a lean child theme, a fully custom theme from $1,500, and a custom WooCommerce storefront from $3,000. What does “custom WordPress theme” include?
A child theme extends an existing parent theme; it is not the same scope as designing and building a new theme from scratch. WordPress supports both block and classic themes. Its Theme Developer Handbook says a block theme, available from WordPress 5.9, is built mainly using HTML and a theme configuration file; classic themes primarily use PHP, JavaScript, and CSS. WordPress Theme Developer Handbook.
A theme controls presentation and templates—the files that define the document structure shown on the front end. WordPress also uses theme.json to configure settings and styles. Ask whether the quote covers visual design, theme implementation, responsive layouts, reusable templates, custom blocks, editor controls, and documentation. Separate presentation from site functionality in the scope. WordPress directory-release guidance says themes submitted to the directory must not include plugins or non-design functionality such as forms, and its stated rules exclude shortcodes, custom post types, and custom blocks. A private client build is not automatically bound to every directory submission rule, but it is still important to decide which functions belong in plugins so they can remain usable if the theme changes. WordPress Theme Review: Required.
What drives the quote?
- Design and discovery: Supplying an approved design is different from asking the developer to research, create a visual system, revise it, and document it. Specify design ownership and included review rounds. Ullah’s 2026 guide identifies designer involvement as a cost factor. Source.
- Number and uniqueness of templates: A few standard layouts take different effort from distinct landing, archive, search, product, account, and editorial templates. Templates determine front-end structure and layout. WordPress documentation.
- Custom blocks and editing controls: Count bespoke blocks and state what editors should be able to change without code. The 2026 practitioner guide identifies custom block work as a price driver. Ullah, 2026.
- Commerce and integrations: A WooCommerce scope may include product, archive, cart, checkout, and account templates, plus integrations or migration. Deep WooCommerce work is associated with the high end of Ullah’s estimate. Ullah, 2026.
- Quality checks and handoff: Define responsive behavior, browser and device coverage, accessibility review, performance expectations, testing, documentation, training, and launch support. WordPress directory guidance sets requirements for submitted themes, including files, testing, documentation, and review compliance. WordPress Theme Review: Required.
- Migration and continuing support: Say whether content, URLs, redirects, analytics, and SEO preservation are included. Price ongoing maintenance separately: the cited sources do not establish a universal maintenance fee.
How to compare proposals fairly
Give each provider the same written brief and ask for itemized deliverables, exclusions, and change-request rates. A lower total may cover customizing an existing theme rather than original design and a bespoke build. Confirm the work before comparing totals. Ullah, 2026; AvyaTech, 2026; Responsive Miracle.
