How to Add Content and Customize WordPress RSS Feeds

WordPress feed links, outgoing item content, custom RSS 2 XML, and the RSS block serve different purposes. Choose the right approach for the result you want.

First decide whether you want to link to your existing feed, change the post content it sends, add extra XML fields to each RSS item, or display another site’s feed on a page. These are separate WordPress tasks: use a feed link for discovery, the the_content_feed filter for outgoing post content, rss2_item for additional RSS 2 item markup, and the RSS block to embed an incoming feed.

Choose what you want to change

Goal WordPress approach What it changes
Let visitors find your feed Place a feed URL link in your theme Site presentation; it does not alter feed items
Add or change text in outgoing feed items the_content_feed filter The post content sent to feed readers
Add custom item-level XML to an RSS 2.0 feed rss2_item action Additional markup within each RSS 2 item
Show another site’s feed on a WordPress page or post RSS block Embedded display on your site; it does not customize your outgoing feed

WordPress provides built-in feed types, including RSS 2.0 and Atom. Its feeds guide describes ways to output feed URLs and add links in theme areas such as a sidebar or footer.

Change the post content sent in your feed

Use the the_content_feed filter when you want to append or modify post-body content in an outgoing feed. WordPress applies the_content first, then applies this feed-specific filter before sending the content to an RSS reader or browser. The callback receives the current content and feed type, and must return the content string. See the WordPress hook reference.

For example, this callback appends a short note to the content passed through the filter:

function freedom251_add_feed_note( $content, $feed_type ) {
    $content .= '<p>Thanks for reading.</p>';
    return $content;
}
add_filter( 'the_content_feed', 'freedom251_add_feed_note', 10, 2 );

This is an illustrative example, not a tested snippet. The second argument is available if your callback needs to distinguish feed types. Keep generated markup appropriate to the feed output and check the resulting feed after making a change.

Do not use the_content_rss for new code: WordPress marks that hook deprecated and points developers to the_content_feed instead (deprecated hook reference).

Add extra XML to each RSS 2 item

Use the rss2_item action when your goal is item-level markup rather than changing the post body. It runs after WordPress outputs the default data for each RSS 2 item; the hook reference documents the insertion point.

A custom element is useful only if its XML structure suits the RSS format you are producing and the consuming software knows what to do with it. Feed readers may ignore unfamiliar elements, and arbitrary markup can undermine feed validity. Define the receiving reader or integration’s expected element and structure before adding custom XML; do not assume every reader will display it.

Display another feed with the RSS block

If you want posts from a different site to appear within one of your pages or posts, use WordPress’s RSS block. It displays a specified feed and offers display controls such as the number of items and whether to show author, date, or an excerpt. This block is for displaying an incoming feed; it does not change the content in your site’s own feed.

Make a feed link easy to find

When visitors should be able to subscribe to your existing feed, add a link through your theme rather than changing feed item output. WordPress’s feeds documentation covers feed URL template tags and describes sidebar and footer placement as options. Use a clear label so visitors know the link opens or subscribes to a feed.

Check your result

After changing feed output, inspect the generated feed and try it in the feed readers or integrations your audience uses. Confirm that the intended content or XML appears in the right item and that the feed remains usable. This is a practical compatibility check; WordPress’s hook documentation does not establish behavior for every feed reader.

If your goal is full text rather than an excerpt, first inspect the feed your site currently generates and its Reading settings. Available controls and defaults can vary; do not assume a single dashboard setting behaves identically across WordPress versions.
