WordPress Post Analytics: How to Track Blog Stats

Connect WordPress to an analytics tool, verify tracking, and use page-level reports to understand individual posts—not just overall blog traffic.

To track blog stats in WordPress, connect an analytics tool, verify it is collecting data, then open reports for the individual post you want to assess. For a Google-based starting point, Google Site Kit connects WordPress with Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console. Use GA4 to understand visits and on-site activity; use Search Console to see how pages appear in Google Search and how many clicks they receive.

Choose an analytics tool for your WordPress site

Your best option depends on whether you need Google reporting, simple post activity counts, or greater control over where analytics data is stored. These tools do not necessarily count activity the same way: collection methods, definitions, filters, and visitors’ consent choices can all affect the numbers.

Option Useful when What it offers Tradeoffs
Google Site Kit with GA4 and Search Console You want Google data in the WordPress dashboard. Official Google integration, site and page-specific reporting, and Search Console visibility data alongside Analytics. Requires Google accounts and setup. Permissions, consent behavior, and data delays matter. Advanced event tracking may require GA4 or Google Tag Manager configuration.
Jetpack Stats You mainly want straightforward blog activity and post views. Post views, likes, comments, and daily trends. It is a separate reporting system from GA4, so its counts and reporting behavior may differ. Check Jetpack’s current terms and connection details.
Analytify You want GA4 reports close to posts in WordPress. Its WordPress.org listing describes per-post views, users, bounce rate, and average time on page. Some capabilities are Pro features. Check the current feature split and compatibility before choosing it.
Matomo for WordPress You value self-hosting and control over analytics data. Self-hosted analytics integrated with WordPress. It uses server resources. Matomo recommends limiting usage to sites with up to 50,000 page views per month when capacity is uncertain; this is vendor guidance, not a universal capacity benchmark. Matomo’s WordPress installation guide also discusses Cloud and On-Premise options.

For a simple Google-centered setup, begin with Site Kit. Its installation documentation lists WordPress 5.2 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, and requires a publicly accessible production site. Review the Site Kit installation and setup requirements before installing.

Connect Site Kit to GA4

  1. In WordPress, install and activate the Site Kit by Google plugin.
  2. Go to Site Kit > Dashboard, start setup, and sign in with the Google account that has access to the relevant services.
  3. Complete site verification. Connect Search Console when prompted if you want Google Search visibility data in the dashboard.
  4. Connect Analytics during setup, or later at Site Kit > Settings > Connect More Services > Analytics.
  5. Select the appropriate Analytics account, property, and web data stream, or create them through the setup flow. Check carefully that you have chosen the property for this WordPress site.

Menu labels can change as Google updates its products. Follow the current Site Kit setup guide if the labels differ. After a new account or service connection, the dashboard may take up to 48 hours to begin populating, according to Site Kit’s Analytics setup and reporting documentation.

Find statistics for an individual post

Site-wide totals cannot tell you how a particular article is doing. In the Site Kit dashboard, select a page or post from the search results to see URL-specific metrics. Site Kit’s toolbar integration can also show information for the page you are viewing. See Site Kit’s page-specific metrics guide.

Use the reporting period and the exact post URL as context when interpreting the figures. The main measures answer different questions:

  • Views or page views: how often content was viewed according to that tool’s definition.
  • Users: an estimate of distinct visitors over the selected period; it is not interchangeable with views.
  • Acquisition or source: where visits came from, such as search, referrals, social, or direct traffic, when the report provides that breakdown.
  • Engagement or time on page: indicators of interaction. Neither proves on its own that an article is useful or successful.
  • Search impressions and clicks: how often a page appeared in Google Search and the clicks it received from those appearances. These are not counts of all visits to your site.

Use the combination that fits the question: views and users for readership volume, source for how readers arrived, and engagement for clues about on-site behavior. Search impressions and clicks help assess search visibility, which is different from traffic measured in Analytics.

Separate site traffic from Google Search visibility

GA4 describes visits and on-site behavior. Search Console reports how pages appear in Google Search and the clicks those search results receive. Site Kit can display information from both services, but the measures are not interchangeable: a Search Console click is not a count of every visit, and Analytics traffic is not a measure of all search impressions.

Track events only when you have a defined goal

Page views and traffic sources are a practical starting point. Add event or conversion tracking when you can state the action you want to measure—such as a completed signup—and have configured measurement for it. Site Kit alone cannot configure event tracking; Site Kit’s documentation describes configuring it in combination with Google Tag Manager and/or GA4. See the event tracking guide.

Check tracking before relying on a report

If a report is empty or unexpectedly low, check the setup and the conditions under which tracking runs before drawing conclusions. Site Kit’s Analytics troubleshooting guide and setup documentation cover common setup issues.

  • Confirm the property and stream: make sure Site Kit is connected to the GA4 property and web data stream for the intended site.
  • Check that tracking is installed: verify the tracking snippet is present and that you have not accidentally set up duplicate tracking.
  • Check site access and account permissions: the site must be publicly accessible, and the signed-in Google account needs appropriate access to the connected services.
  • Account for consent settings: if a consent-management plugin requires acceptance before analytics cookies run, tracking may not occur until a visitor grants consent. Do not disable consent controls just to increase reported counts.
  • Allow time for data to appear: a newly connected setup may not populate the dashboard immediately.

When two tools disagree, compare their metric definitions, filters, permissions, and consent behavior rather than assuming one is wrong. Their counts can differ because they collect and define activity differently; there is no universal adjustment factor for reconciling them.
