How to Create a Donation Form in WordPress

Learn how to add a donation form to WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress with GiveWP, connect payments, choose recurring options, and test the donor experience.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right way to add a donation form depends on where your WordPress site is hosted. On WordPress.com, eligible plans include a built-in Donations Form block that connects to Stripe. On self-hosted WordPress, you can install a donation plugin such as GiveWP, configure its form and payment gateway, then publish it with a block, shortcode, widget, or standalone page.

Choose the setup that matches your site

Option Best fit Payment and giving options How to publish
WordPress.com Donations Form block A WordPress.com site on Premium, Business, or Commerce Stripe; one-time, monthly, or yearly donations Add the native block to a page or post
GiveWP on self-hosted WordPress A site where you can install plugins and want multiple form-display methods GiveWP lists Stripe and PayPal; features vary by gateway, form editor, and plan Use a GiveWP block, shortcode, widget, or standalone form page

WordPress.com’s native block is not the same as installing a plugin on a self-hosted site. If you are unsure which you have, check your dashboard and hosting account before following the steps below.

Create a donation form on WordPress.com

WordPress.com’s support documentation, last reviewed August 11, 2026, lists Premium, Business, and Commerce as eligible plans for the Donations Form block. The block uses Stripe, and donations go to the site owner’s Stripe account. See WordPress.com’s Donations Form block instructions for current details.

  1. Open the page editor. In your WordPress.com dashboard, open an existing page or post, or create a page for donations.
  2. Add the block. Select the block inserter, search for “donations,” and choose Donations Form. You can also type /donations in the editor to insert it.
  3. Connect Stripe. Follow the prompt to connect your Stripe account so the block can process contributions.
  4. Configure the form. Set the currency, suggested amounts, frequency, and appearance. The block supports one-time contributions and recurring monthly or yearly subscriptions.
  5. Preview the donor flow, then publish. Check the form on the page and make sure its contribution choices and payment steps are clear before sharing the page.

Tell donors what checkout requires

WordPress.com says donors need a WordPress.com account to contribute and receive an automatic receipt. That requirement can affect whether the checkout suits your audience, so explain it near the form rather than surprising people at payment.

Create a donation form on self-hosted WordPress with GiveWP

GiveWP is a plugin option for self-hosted WordPress. Its WordPress.org listing describes form creation, Stripe and PayPal options, several ways to display forms, and a Test Gateway. It lists minimum requirements of WordPress 6.6, PHP 7.4, and MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10+, and recommends SSL/HTTPS. Check the live listing against your host and WordPress version before installing because requirements can change.

  1. Install the plugin. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, search for GiveWP, then install and activate it.
  2. Create a donation form. Use GiveWP’s form tools to set giving levels or allow a custom amount. Choose the form editor that suits your setup.
  3. Choose and connect a payment gateway. Configure the payment account, then confirm that the gateway supports the form editor and features you intend to use. GiveWP lists Stripe and PayPal, but compatibility is not universal across editors and features.
  4. Publish the form. Add it to a page using a GiveWP block, shortcode, or widget, or use the standalone form page option.
  5. Run through a test transaction. Use GiveWP’s Test Gateway or the applicable test mode to check the donor-facing steps before directing people to the form. This is a recommended precaution, not a claim that a transaction has been tested here.

Check the form editor and gateway together

GiveWP’s visual builder is block-based, using sections and blocks. Its visual form builder documentation cautions that not all gateways work with both the visual builder and the older form editor. Check the current compatibility information for the gateway and editor you plan to use before building the form; do not assume a gateway supports every feature or display style.

Plan for recurring donations and paid features

WordPress.com’s native block offers monthly and yearly recurring contributions on eligible plans. GiveWP’s recurring-donation option is separate: its recurring donations page advertises an add-on at $149 per year and says it is also included in Plus, Pro, or Agency plans. The page identifies Stripe and PayPal as supported for recurring donations. Pricing and packaging can change, so confirm current terms and gateway compatibility before choosing this route.

Custom fields and other form capabilities can also depend on the selected product tier or add-on. Decide which donor information you actually need, then verify that the exact form editor, gateway, and plan support it. Avoid collecting unnecessary details: each extra field adds work for donors.
