Store streaming-automation credentials in a restricted secret store, give each workflow only the access it needs, and keep secrets out of source code, commands, logs, and artifacts. A secret store alone is not enough: anyone who can change a workflow, run it with privileged access, or control its runner may be able to expose the credentials it uses.
What counts as a secret in streaming automation?
A secret is any credential that grants access to a service or resource. In scheduled or event-driven streaming workflows, that may include API keys, OAuth tokens, webhook signing secrets, stream keys, and credentials used to retrieve other secrets. Treat a credential as sensitive even if it is not labelled an API key.
First map what each workflow can reach. OWASP recommends documenting pipeline secrets and why they are stored. Record each credential’s service and environment, the workflow that uses it, its owner, permissions, storage location, and expiry or rotation procedure. Remove unnecessary duplicates: sharing one credential across unrelated jobs increases the impact if any one job is compromised. OWASP CI/CD Security Cheat Sheet
Where should you store API keys and tokens?
Use CI platform secrets for a tightly controlled workflow
A CI platform’s encrypted secret facility can be suitable for a small workflow if access to the repository and secret scope is controlled. GitHub, for example, supports repository, environment, and organization secrets; organization secrets can be limited to selected repositories. Choose the narrowest scope that fits the job rather than making a credential broadly available. GitHub Docs: Using secrets in GitHub Actions

Evaluate a secret manager for multiple workloads or central policy
For broader infrastructure or multiple workloads, compare a dedicated or cloud-hosted secret manager. OWASP names AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault, Google Secret Manager, HashiCorp Vault, Conjur, and Keeper as examples—not as a comparative ranking or endorsement. Evaluate identity integration, per-secret and per-workload permissions, audit and alerting, rotation support, runner compatibility, recovery procedures, and ongoing administration. A team credential vault may help people share human-managed credentials, but it is not automatically suitable for injecting runtime secrets into every job. OWASP CI/CD Security Cheat Sheet
Expose a value only to the step that needs it
Inject a secret into the process or step that uses it, using the mechanism supported by your automation platform and target service. Avoid copying it into generated files, build artifacts, caches, or debug output unless there is a documented need and a deliberate protection and cleanup plan. There is no universally safe injection mechanism established for every streaming service.

How do you limit what a workflow can do?
Use a separate, narrowly scoped credential for each job or environment where practical. Restrict which repositories, environments, and workflows can access it, and grant only the permissions necessary for the task. On GitHub, repository write access can expose repository secrets, and GitHub recommends giving GITHUB_TOKEN the minimum permissions required. GitHub Docs: Security hardening for GitHub Actions GitHub Docs: Automatic token authentication
Review who can edit workflow definitions and which events run them. A job that executes untrusted code while holding a secret can expose it even if the secret itself is stored securely. Do not make secrets available to untrusted pull-request code. Review third-party actions and workflow components before use, pin or otherwise control their versions according to your platform’s guidance, and keep runners patched and monitored. OWASP warns that CI/CD tooling should be treated as a production environment and discusses secret exfiltration through remote code execution and excessive token permissions. How do you stop secrets leaking into logs and artifacts?
- Do not hardcode credentials in source code or committed configuration. Keep them out of workflow files, generated output, artifacts, caches, and diagnostic bundles.
- Avoid passing secrets directly in command-line arguments or interactive shell commands that may be retained in shell history, process diagnostics, or logs. AWS specifically warns that command shells can expose secrets through logging and command history. AWS Secrets Manager best practices
- Review workflow output, error reporting, artifacts, and third-party integrations for accidental disclosure. Limit debug output when credentials are in scope.
- Use masking as a secondary safeguard, not as permission to print a secret. GitHub Docs’ secure-use reference warns: “Because there are multiple ways a secret value can be transformed, automatic redaction is not guaranteed.” That is a warning about the limits of masking, not a claim that every log leaks secrets. GitHub Docs: Security hardening for GitHub Actions
When should you use short-lived credentials and rotation?
Prefer workload identity or short-lived credentials when the target service and automation platform support a trusted identity integration. Otherwise, use the narrowest available permissions, an explicit expiry if supported, and a documented rotation process. OWASP advises that credentials CI/CD uses to authenticate to a secret system should be limited to the required secrets and services and expire after the job completes. Do not assume a particular streaming platform supports federation or temporary API access without checking its official documentation. OWASP CI/CD Security Cheat Sheet
Rotation is not just issuing a new value: the consumer must be updated safely, and the old credential must be revoked. For a planned change, test the replacement, update the workflow or secret store, confirm the job succeeds, then revoke the old value. AWS says Secrets Manager automatic rotation can be configured as often as every four hours; this is an AWS service capability, not a recommended interval for every credential. What should you do if a credential may have leaked?
- Revoke or disable the exposed credential promptly where the service allows it. If immediate revocation would interrupt a critical workflow, coordinate the replacement and cutover with the credential’s owner.
- Issue a replacement with the narrowest practical permissions and update only the affected jobs or environments.
- Inspect relevant workflow runs, logs, artifacts, and access records to determine where the credential may have been exposed and which workflows could access it.
- Confirm the updated workflow works, then remove any remaining copies of the old value and verify that the old credential is revoked.
- Review how the exposure happened, including who could change or trigger the workflow, and adjust access, permissions, storage scope, and monitoring to prevent a repeat.
Keeping an inventory of credentials, workflow access, and configuration owners makes this response more bounded than trying to reconstruct access after an incident.
