Use PDFCrowd’s wait_for_element when the page has a reliable CSS selector that appears only after the content you need is ready. If there is no dependable readiness marker, use javascript_delay to wait a chosen number of milliseconds after document load. The selector approach is usually more precise; a fixed delay is a fallback, not a guarantee.
Choose a wait strategy
| Option | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
wait_for_element |
You can identify a CSS selector that appears when the required content is ready. | It avoids guessing a duration, but conversion fails if the selector does not appear before the maximum wait allowed by your license. |
javascript_delay |
You cannot identify a reliable readiness selector and can accept a fixed wait. | It is straightforward, but the right duration depends on the page and the license sets the maximum. |
These controls address different signals: wait_for_element waits for an element to appear, while javascript_delay waits for elapsed time after document load. Neither establishes that every script or background request on a site has finished. See PDFCrowd’s HTTP API parameter reference.
Wait for a CSS readiness marker
Choose a selector tied to the specific content the PDF needs—not merely an element that appears early while the page is still fetching data. PDFCrowd’s HTTP API accepts CSS selectors, including IDs, classes, element names, comma-separated alternatives, and descendant selectors. The search includes the main document and iframes.
For example, to wait for an element with the ID content-loaded, pass this form field in an HTTP request:

-F 'wait_for_element=#content-loaded'
The same parameter can take selectors such as #main-content, .main-content, table, table, #main-content, or div.user-panel.main p.article. Use a marker whose appearance reflects readiness of the content you want converted. A generic container can exist before its asynchronous data is inserted.
PDFCrowd states that if the element is not found, conversion fails. The allowed wait limit depends on the license; a selector that never appears will not produce a successful conversion merely by waiting indefinitely. Check the HTTP reference for the parameter’s current behavior and limits.

Use a fixed JavaScript delay when there is no marker
Set javascript_delay in milliseconds to wait after document load. The HTTP API reference gives a default of 200 ms and says the maximum is license-defined. PDFCrowd’s example uses 2,000 ms:
-F javascript_delay=2000
Those are documented parameter values, not universal recommendations. A page may render its data sooner or later, and no specific delay guarantees completion for every site. Choose a value based on the page’s observed behavior, staying within the maximum permitted by your license. See the HTTP API reference and HTTP API examples.

Do not confuse waiting with custom JavaScript
PDFCrowd also documents on_load_javascript for running a script right after document load and custom_javascript for post-load DOM manipulation when the document is ready to print. These hooks let you run or change page content; they are not a substitute for waiting until a source-page readiness selector appears. Use the appropriate control for the task described in the HTTP API reference.
Troubleshoot missing content or failed conversions
PDFCrowd’s API guide identifies missing dynamic content as a problem that can be addressed with wait_for_element or javascript_delay. If the PDF is missing data or a wait fails, work through these checks:

- Preview your files from Doxillion before converting them.
- Use batch conversion to convert thousands of files at once.
- Enjoy an easy-to-use, intuitive interface with a Drag and Drop file option.
- Burn your converted or original files directly to disc.
- Confirm the selector is valid and appears. Make sure it matches an element in the document PDFCrowd converts and that it represents the needed content, rather than a container created before the data arrives.
- Check for a selector timeout. If the selector never appears, conversion fails when the maximum wait allowed by the license is reached. Verify the selector and the page’s own loading behavior before increasing or changing waits.
- Inspect PDFCrowd’s debug information. The
x-pdfcrowd-debug-logresponse header links to details about resource loading, timeouts, and browser console messages. Conversion history also makes logs available. Use these details to distinguish a wait-setting problem from a page resource or script failure. - Investigate page-specific requirements. If the needed content depends on authentication, is blocked, or is rendered somewhere other than the main document or searched iframes, a longer delay may not fix it. Review the debug log and the page’s loading requirements.

If your goal is a website screenshot rather than a PDF conversion, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
