If you need an official filing record, download it from India’s e-Filing portal; if you need an image of exactly what appears after login, capture the relevant part of your screen with Windows Snipping Tool or macOS Screenshot. A screenshot is only a picture of the visible page—it is not a substitute for an ITR acknowledgement, filed-return PDF or processing intimation.
Choose the right record before taking a screenshot
For proof of filing, a copy of a filed return or a processing notice, first check whether the official document is available. The Income Tax Department’s ITR Status service lists the ITR-V acknowledgement, uploaded JSON, complete ITR form in PDF and intimation order among the records that may be viewed and downloaded. Availability depends on the filing and account circumstances described in the Department’s ITR Status guidance.

If you need to preserve a display or error state, or show what a particular logged-in page looked like, a screenshot is appropriate. It captures only what is visible and should not be treated as the official tax record.

Find and download an official return record
Check ITR Status
The Department’s ITR Status service can be used before or after login by eligible taxpayers and authorized roles. Its manual describes pre-login access for a filed return with a valid acknowledgement number and a valid mobile number for OTP. Post-login access requires a registered user with at least one filed ITR. The available records may include the ITR-V acknowledgement, uploaded JSON, complete ITR PDF and intimation order; the manual’s list does not mean every item will be available in every case. Follow the current ITR Status instructions.

Download an intimation order
For a return processed by CPC, the Department’s instructions direct users to the e-Filing portal, then e-file > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns, and then Download Intimation Order. See the Department’s intimation-order instructions. If processing is not complete or the order is not available, the download may not yet be offered.
Return preview
A Department filing presentation for AY 2021–22 documents Download and Print controls for a return preview and says the download is a PDF. That presentation is historical, so the current portal’s labels and layout may differ; use the live portal rather than relying on an old screen-by-screen sequence. Take a screenshot on Windows or Mac
Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Sign in to the official e-Filing portal using its normal authentication flow and open the page you need.
- Press Windows+Shift+S to open the screen snip overlay.
- Select the relevant region. Snipping Tool also supports window and full-screen capture; choose a window or full screen only if you actually need it.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool, inspect it, and save it. Microsoft documents these capture and save options for Windows 10 and 11 in its Snipping Tool guidance.
Mac
- Open the logged-in page you need to capture.
- Press Shift-Command-4 and drag to select a portion of the screen. For a window or menu, press Shift-Command-4, then Space, and select it.
- Alternatively, press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls and choose full screen, window or portion capture.
- By default, screenshots are saved to the desktop. In Screenshot controls, open Options to change the save location. Apple notes that some functionality depends on macOS version; see its Mac screenshot instructions.
Protect tax and identity information
- Capture only the part needed for your purpose; avoid including PAN, Aadhaar, bank details, address, acknowledgement numbers or other information the recipient does not need.
- Before sharing, inspect the image at full size. If you must conceal information, redact or crop a copy and preserve the original securely if you need it for your own records.
- Use the official portal and its configured authentication options. The Department’s manual describes password login and higher-security routes such as OTP, net banking, EVC and DSC; follow the method offered for your account. See the Department’s login guidance.
- Never give your password or OTP to someone offering to capture the page for you. The Income Tax Department says it never asks for PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for financial accounts through email; see the Department’s official portal.

The document download is missing
Check which record you need and whether it is available for the return’s current status. The ITR Status manual lists records that may be downloaded; it does not establish that every record appears for every filing. An intimation order is associated with a return processed by CPC. Use the portal’s current status and help instructions rather than treating a missing link as proof that no return was filed.

The screenshot is blank, incomplete or includes the wrong area
Repeat the capture and select the intended region or window. On Windows, use the Snipping Tool overlay; on Mac, use the selected-portion or window controls. Check the saved image before sharing it.

Authenticate through the official portal’s configured login route. A screenshot API should not be used to get around login, OTP or other access controls; keep credentials and one-time codes private.

The screenshot exposes more information than intended
Do not share the unreviewed image. Capture a smaller region or prepare a redacted copy, then verify that the concealed details cannot be read in the saved file.
