How to Fix Chrome Browser Issues in Selenium

Start by checking the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions and the paths Selenium actually uses. Then choose Selenium Manager or a deliberately pinned browser-driver pair and diagnose startup failures in the same environment as your test.

When Selenium cannot start Chrome, first check the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions and the executable paths the test process actually uses. For most current Selenium setups, remove an unnecessary hard-coded driver path and let Selenium Manager resolve the driver; if you need repeatable CI builds or your environment blocks its downloads, pin a compatible browser-and-driver pair instead.

1. Check which Chrome, ChromeDriver, and Selenium your test is using

A Chrome installation can be healthy while Selenium uses a different browser or driver than the one you expect. Record the versions and paths from the same account and environment that runs the test.

  1. In Chrome, open chrome://version and note the browser version and executable path.
  2. In a terminal available to the test process, run chromedriver --version if ChromeDriver is on PATH. Also inspect the test configuration for an explicit driver path or service setting.
  3. Record your Selenium binding version and check that the browser and driver have matching major-version numbers. Selenium’s Chrome-specific documentation describes this compatibility requirement.

For example, a driver reporting “This version of ChromeDriver only supports Chrome version 113” cannot be used with a different Chrome major version. Selenium Manager uses this kind of mismatch to illustrate how a Chrome update can break a manually pinned driver. For Chrome 115 and newer, Google directs users to Chrome for Testing release data to find matching browser and driver releases; see What is ChromeDriver?.

2. Choose how Selenium gets ChromeDriver

Use Selenium Manager for the routine case

Selenium Manager ships with Selenium releases starting at 4.6. When the binding has not already been given a driver, it acts as a fallback: it detects the browser, resolves a suitable driver using vendor metadata, and can download and cache it. The simplest way to use that path is to avoid supplying an unnecessary explicit driver executable.

from selenium import webdriver

# With current Selenium, Selenium Manager can resolve ChromeDriver
# when no explicit driver executable has been supplied.
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    print(driver.title)
finally:
    driver.quit()

See the Selenium Manager documentation for its behavior and configuration options. It does not override a driver that your Selenium binding has already been given.

Pin the browser and driver together when builds need a known pair

In CI or another controlled environment, explicitly managing both versions can make the setup reproducible. Update the browser and driver as a pair, keep both versions visible in the build configuration, and ensure the configured driver path points to the intended executable. This approach shifts compatibility and update work to your project.

3. Fix a missing or wrong driver executable

If Selenium says it cannot locate the driver executable, inspect both PATH and any explicit driver service or system-property configuration. Confirm the configured file exists and is executable by the user running the test—not just by your interactive account. Selenium’s driver installation troubleshooting covers missing driver paths and recommends current Selenium and diagnostic logging when the issue persists.

  • If an explicit path is configured, verify it points to the intended ChromeDriver binary; remove the override if you want Selenium Manager to act as fallback.
  • If relying on PATH, inspect PATH as seen by the IDE, CI runner, or service. Those environments may not inherit your shell’s PATH.
  • If multiple driver installations exist, identify which one is selected and remove or correct the unintended entry.

4. Diagnose Chrome that will not start

When Chrome exits immediately, compare a direct Chrome launch with the Selenium launch under the same user and environment. ChromeDriver’s startup troubleshooting guide specifically calls out test harnesses and continuous build systems as contexts where startup can fail.

Compare the actual launch context

  • Check that the configured browser binary exists at the path available to the test process.
  • Compare the user identity and permissions between a successful interactive run and the failing automated run.
  • Check the profile directory, relevant environment variables, and available runtime resources. These are diagnostic checks, not universal causes.
  • Compare Chrome’s launch options in the failing harness with a direct launch, narrowing down differences one at a time.

Use Chrome options deliberately

Selenium’s Chrome documentation shows options including --headless=new and --user-data-dir=.... For example, Python can configure headless mode like this:

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options

options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    print(driver.title)
finally:
    driver.quit()

If you specify a custom profile directory, choose one suitable for that run; do not have simultaneous sessions share a profile directory. A profile option is not a guaranteed fix for every startup failure.

Do not add --no-sandbox as a routine repair. ChromeDriver says this workaround is unsupported and highly discouraged; use it only when a specific, understood environment requires it.

5. Treat DevToolsActivePort as a symptom

The message “DevToolsActivePort file doesn’t exist” does not identify one proven universal cause. First confirm browser-driver compatibility and whether Chrome starts directly in the same environment. If direct launch fails, investigate the browser and runtime environment; if it succeeds, compare the exact arguments and user/profile context supplied by ChromeDriver. Do not assume that adding one particular flag will resolve every instance of this error.

6. Check network and platform constraints

Selenium Manager needs remote metadata and downloads to resolve drivers. A proxy or firewall can interrupt that process; Selenium documents proxy configuration, including SE_PROXY, and checking network access as remedies. If your network restricts the required endpoints, configure the proxy or manage the browser and driver explicitly.

Special Linux browser packages may require explicit browser or driver paths. Selenium’s documented Linux support model says its Manager build has been verified for x64; it does not support Linux arm64/aarch64, 32-bit systems, or Raspberry Pi under that model. In those environments, plan for an explicitly managed setup rather than assuming automatic driver resolution will work.

7. Quick error-to-action guide

Symptom First checks
“This version of ChromeDriver only supports Chrome version …” Compare Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions; update the mismatched executable or pin a compatible pair.
Selenium cannot locate the driver executable Inspect PATH and explicit driver settings; verify the binary exists and is executable for the test account.
Chrome exits immediately or fails to start Try a direct launch in the same environment; compare binary path, options, user, profile, permissions, environment, and runtime resources.
Driver resolution fails under Selenium Manager Check proxy/firewall access to metadata and downloads; configure proxy support or manage paths and versions explicitly.
“DevToolsActivePort file doesn’t exist” Treat it as a symptom: establish whether Chrome launches, then compare ChromeDriver’s arguments and profile/user context.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a website rather than automate an interactive Chrome session, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. See the API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
  • An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Selenium Manager replace a driver path I already configured?

No. It is a fallback when Selenium has not otherwise been given a driver.

Should I always add --no-sandbox when Chrome fails in CI?

No. ChromeDriver describes that workaround as unsupported and highly discouraged; use it only for a specific, understood environment requirement.
