First decide whether you need the image the page already publishes for link previews or a new picture of the rendered page. If its og:image is suitable, retrieve that image; if you need the page as it appears in a browser, render the URL and capture a screenshot.
Choose between an existing preview image and a screenshot
An Open Graph image is the image a publisher identifies as representing a page or other object. The Open Graph protocol defines og:image for this purpose, alongside og:title, og:type and og:url as its four basic required properties. It is usually the simplest route when the publisher’s chosen image suits your thumbnail.
A screenshot is different: it is a new image made by rendering the page in a browser. Use one when you want the visible layout, a chosen viewport, or a specific page element. A screenshot may not match the site’s link-preview image.
Retrieve the page’s existing Open Graph image
- Fetch the webpage HTML and inspect its
<head>for a tag like<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/image.jpg">. - If the tag exists, retrieve the image at the URL in its
contentattribute. Check that it is representative and suitable for the destination where you will display it. - If there are several
og:imagetags, the Open Graph protocol says the first is preferred when values conflict. Optional metadata can also provide width, height, MIME type, a secure URL and alt text.
This method returns the publisher’s selected image, not a capture of the page’s current layout. If the metadata is missing or the image does not fit your use, capture the rendered page instead.

Generate a screenshot with Puppeteer
Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() for capturing screenshots. The following Node.js example follows its documented navigation-and-capture pattern:

networkidle2 is the readiness condition used in Puppeteer’s documented example; it is not a guarantee that every site’s content is ready. Pages that keep network requests open, load content later, require authentication or block automation may need different handling or may not capture as expected. A fixed delay can also be brittle because page load times vary.
Generate a screenshot with Playwright
Playwright’s documented flow is to launch a supported browser, create a context and page, navigate to the target, take a screenshot and close the browser. This runnable Node.js example captures the viewport:

Set capture dimensions, scope and format
Viewport or full page
A viewport capture shows the initial visible area at the browser dimensions you set. A full-page capture includes the scrollable page and can be much taller than a typical thumbnail. For a compact preview, set a deliberate viewport and capture that area; use full-page capture only when the whole document is needed.

Capture one element or omit clutter
If the thumbnail should show a card, hero image or other component, capture that element rather than the whole page. Puppeteer supports an element screenshot, and the OpenGraph.io Screenshot API documentation describes selector capture and exclusion selectors. Exclusions can be useful for headers or footers when the chosen tool supports them.
Choose an image format
PNG, JPEG and WebP are documented options in OpenGraph.io’s screenshot API. That service documents JPEG as its default and quality 80 as a setting; these are product defaults, not universal recommendations. Choose the format and quality that meet the destination’s compatibility and file-size needs.

Use a hosted screenshot API
A hosted API handles browser capture behind an HTTP request, which can be useful when you do not want to operate a browser runtime. It still requires credentials and creates a dependency on the service, so check its current terms, pricing and retention behavior before building around it. OpenGraph.io documents controls including format, quality, full-page mode, viewport presets, selectors, exclusions, dark mode, caching, proxy use, capture delay and navigation timeout. Its listed viewport presets are xs 375 × 812, sm 1024 × 768, md 1366 × 768 and lg 1920 × 1080; they are vendor options, not universal thumbnail sizes. Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image is blank or incomplete: the capture may have happened before visible content finished loading, or the site may have blocked or failed to serve it. Try a readiness condition appropriate to the page, wait for a specific selector, or investigate the browser’s navigation errors.
- The screenshot misses content lower on the page: a normal screenshot covers the viewport. Enable full-page capture if the complete scrollable document is required.
- The thumbnail shows banners or overlays: choose an element capture or use a supported exclusion mechanism. Some tools can remove or hide elements; availability depends on the tool.
- The Open Graph image is not the page layout: that is expected.
og:imageis a publisher-provided representative image. Use a browser capture when the rendered appearance is what you need. - A hosted screenshot link stops working: check the provider’s retention rules. OpenGraph.io documents 24-hour expiry for returned screenshot URLs; download or cache images you need to keep.
Plan for production use
For repeated or batch captures, handle navigation failures and timeouts explicitly, choose dimensions and readiness conditions consistently, and decide how results will be cached and retained. A live page can vary in content and behavior, and authentication or anti-bot controls can prevent capture. The available documentation does not establish that any method is universally fastest, cheapest or most reliable; compare tools against your own pages and requirements rather than assuming one wins across all sites.
For a hosted service, verify its current pricing, terms and output-retention behavior before adopting it. For an internally operated browser, account for the browser runtime and your own handling of failed navigation and saved files.
