Choose a viewport screenshot to show what fits on screen or a full-size screenshot to show the page’s overall structure. Device Mode is an approximation, not proof of how the page behaves on a physical phone.
Set up responsive viewports in Chrome
- Open the website in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode. Choose Responsive to enter custom dimensions, or select a device preset when a named device profile is relevant.
- Set the viewport width and height that best communicate the design decision. Record those dimensions for your presentation.
- For the current viewport, select More options > Capture screenshot. To include content beyond the viewport, select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Name or caption the exported image with the page or section, viewport width and height, and capture context.
- Review each image at presentation size. Check that important content is readable and that banners, menus, or loading states do not obscure the design.
Google’s instructions for Device Mode and its screenshot options are in Simulate mobile devices with device mode.
Choose the right viewport and capture type
| What you need to communicate | Capture to use | How to present it |
|---|---|---|
| What a visitor can see without scrolling at a particular responsive size | Capture screenshot | Label the viewport width and height; keep these dimensions consistent when comparing design alternatives. |
| The page’s overall structure, including content below the fold | Capture a full size screenshot | Label the page or section and the viewport dimensions used for the capture. |
| Whether an outcome depends on a real phone’s behavior | Use emulation as an initial comparison, then check on a physical device | Identify which images are emulated and which were captured or checked on-device. |
For a useful comparison, capture the same page or component at clearly recorded widths and heights. Viewport captures are best when the question is what fits on screen; full-size captures are useful when the question is how the page is organized from top to bottom.
What Device Mode can and cannot show
Chrome describes Device Mode as “a first-order approximation” of how a page looks and feels on mobile. It simulates a mobile experience from a desktop or laptop; some device behavior cannot be simulated. Do not describe an emulated screenshot as evidence that the site was tested on a physical phone. If device-specific behavior matters, Chrome recommends running the page on a mobile device, including through Remote Debugging where appropriate. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL at a chosen viewport through one API request. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the specified URL. Create an API key first, and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options, formats, and response details.

Quick Recap
Common capture problems
- The screenshot shows the wrong layout: Check that Device Mode is on and confirm the width and height before capturing.
- The image cuts off content you meant to show: Use Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page, rather than the current-viewport capture.
- A banner, menu, or loading state hides the design: Review the image before adding it to the deck; dismiss or wait for transient content as appropriate, then capture again.
- A client interprets an emulated image as a phone test: Label it as a Device Mode capture and arrange a physical-device check when device-specific behavior is part of the decision.
- Responsive alternatives are difficult to compare: Capture the same page or component at consistent dimensions and include those dimensions in every caption.
