The scheduler controls when the capture runs; the rotating proxy controls how requests are routed and, depending on the provider, whether a session stays pinned or changes between requests. For an authorized monitor, Playwright can handle the browser and screenshot while cron, a CI scheduler, or another timer handles the schedule.
What the scheduler, browser, and rotating proxy each do
These are separate parts of the workflow. A scheduler starts the job at the chosen time. Playwright opens the page and captures it. The proxy service routes the browser’s network traffic and applies its documented rotation or session rules. A proxy does not schedule captures, and a scheduler does not provide proxy rotation.
This guide is for authorized monitoring. Check the target site’s terms and the proxy provider’s rules, and treat rate limits, access denials, and challenge pages as outcomes to respect—not obstacles to bypass.
Build a repeatable capture workflow
- Define what to capture. Choose the target URL, schedule timezone and cadence, viewport dimensions, capture scope, image format, and retention period. Capture no more often than your monitoring need requires.
- Choose proxy behavior. Use the endpoint and any credentials documented by your provider. If the page loads several resources that need a consistent session, check whether the provider supports session pinning; some providers rotate automatically, while others let you keep a session for a period. Do not assume the rotation policy from the word “rotating.”
- Configure Playwright. Set the proxy when launching the browser. Playwright supports HTTP and SOCKS proxies and optional proxy username/password. Keep credentials in the scheduler or deployment platform’s secret store, not in source control. See Playwright’s proxy documentation.
- Wait for a meaningful page state. Prefer a selector or another stable condition over a short arbitrary sleep. Choose a condition that reflects the content you need to monitor, such as a page heading or chart container.
- Capture and name the output. Use a viewport image for a fixed-screen view, a full-page image for below-the-fold content, or an element screenshot for a specific component. Add the target identifier and UTC capture time to the filename or object key.
- Store and log the run. Save images somewhere durable. Log the intended schedule time, actual capture time, target, final URL, browser version, outcome, and a safe proxy/session identifier if useful. Do not log proxy passwords or sensitive page content.
Example: Playwright script with an HTTP proxy
Install Playwright for Node.js with npm install playwright, then install a supported browser with npx playwright install chromium. Save the following as capture.mjs. Replace the environment-variable values through your secret store and adapt the URL, selector, viewport, and output location to your authorized monitoring task.

}For SOCKS, set PROXY_SERVER to the SOCKS endpoint format specified by the provider. Add only the authentication fields the provider requires. Avoid printing the full endpoint if it embeds credentials.
The example waits for the document to be parsed and the body to become visible; neither condition guarantees that a client-rendered chart, image, or other changing element is ready. For those pages, replace or supplement the body wait with a selector tied to the content you need. Choose capture scope and keep comparisons fair
- Viewport: captures the visible screen at the configured viewport size. Use it when you want to compare the same screen area across runs.
- Full page: captures content beyond the initial viewport. Long or dynamically loaded pages may need additional waiting or page-specific handling.
- Element: capture a component when the rest of the page is irrelevant. Locate the element and call
locator.screenshot({ path: outputPath })rather than taking a page screenshot. - Format: PNG is suitable when pixel fidelity matters; JPEG or WebP can reduce storage, depending on the content and quality settings you choose.
Visual output can change even when the website has not: operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode can affect rendering. Schedule the script and manage the output
The scheduling syntax depends on the runner you choose. Configure its timezone and recurrence explicitly, then invoke the script in that environment with the target URL and proxy secrets available as environment variables. Prevent overlapping runs if a slow capture could still be running when the next scheduled time arrives. The scheduling platform’s own documentation is the authority for its syntax and timezone behavior.

Use an output key that is sortable and unambiguous, for example target-id/2026-10-04T12-00-00Z.png. Store the intended run time separately from the actual capture time so delays are visible. Decide how long to retain images, who can access them, and whether encryption or restricted storage is needed. Screenshots and logs may expose account details or customer information.
Self-hosted browser or hosted capture?
Self-hosted Playwright gives you direct control over the browser configuration, capture logic, timing, and storage, but you also operate the runtime and integrate the scheduler and proxy. Hosted browser services may bundle some browser operations; their limits, scheduling support, proxy controls, pricing, and data handling differ by service and plan. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation distinguishes quick screenshot actions from scripted automation with Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP and links to service limits and pricing. Troubleshooting scheduled captures
- Proxy connection or authentication fails: confirm the endpoint scheme, host, port, credentials, and any IP allowlisting requirements against the provider’s documentation. Check that the scheduled environment can reach the endpoint.
- Navigation times out: inspect whether the proxy is reachable and whether the page is slow or blocked. Increase the timeout only when the target legitimately needs more time; do not respond by raising request frequency or rotating identities to defeat access controls.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: wait for the specific content selector instead of assuming
domcontentloadedmeans the page is visually ready. Check for client-side rendering, lazy-loaded content, and elements that appear only after interaction. - Runs differ unexpectedly: compare browser version, operating system, viewport, fonts, headless configuration, and the page state at capture time. Keep these stable where possible.
- Several page resources fail despite a successful initial navigation: verify the provider’s rotation and session policy. If the workflow requires one apparent session across a page load, use documented session pinning if available.
- Runs overlap or storage fills: prevent concurrent executions when appropriate, monitor job duration and output volume, and define a retention policy rather than keeping every capture indefinitely.
- A challenge, rate limit, or access denial appears: record it as the run outcome, reduce or pause monitoring as appropriate, and contact the site owner or obtain authorization. Do not use rotation to evade the site’s controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a rotating proxy schedule website screenshots?
No. The scheduler triggers the script; the proxy routes browser traffic and applies its rotation or session behavior.
Should the proxy rotate for every request in a page load?
Not necessarily. If page resources need a consistent apparent session, check whether your provider supports session pinning and follow its documented controls.
Can I use a screenshot API for recurring captures?
Yes, but a recurring job still needs a scheduler or other trigger. An API request by itself is on-demand.
