Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To restart a multi-file playlist automatically, add the files to OBS Studio’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube’s stream key connects OBS to your live event; the repeat behavior is controlled separately in the OBS source.
Choose the right OBS source
Use VLC Video for a playlist of multiple media files. OBS’s built-in Media Source is for an individual local file; its Loop option repeats that file, not a multi-file playlist. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.

Configure a playlist to repeat
- Install VLC if needed. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear in OBS. Match the architectures: OBS’s guide specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Open the scene you will stream. In OBS, select the scene that should show the playlist.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video, then create a new source or select an existing one.
- Add the media files. In the source properties, add the files you want in the playlist and arrange them in the desired playback order.
- Enable playlist looping. Turn on Loop Playlist in the VLC Video properties. OBS describes this setting as controlling whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files, and its guide lists it as enabled by default. Check the setting rather than relying on the default.
- Confirm the source is visible. Make sure the VLC Video source is visible in the scene so its video appears in the stream.
Keep playlist looping separate from visibility behavior
Loop Playlist determines what happens when playback reaches the end of the file list. Visibility Behaviour determines what happens when the source is hidden in the scene. OBS provides choices such as stopping and restarting when visible, pausing and resuming, or always playing. Choose the visibility behavior that fits your scene, but do not treat it as the playlist-repeat control.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube as the service if available, then provide the stream key and the stream URL if the configuration asks for it. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the video and audio before using YouTube’s controls to go live.
- Monitor the broadcast. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. See its live streaming tips.
YouTube’s stream URL and key handle the encoder connection. They do not configure how OBS repeats local media. Similarly, YouTube’s DVR setting lets viewers pause and resume the live stream; it does not restart the playlist in OBS. YouTube describes DVR and other stream controls in Manage live stream settings.

Troubleshoot a playlist that does not restart
- The source is missing: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, as required by the OBS guide.
- Only one file repeats: You may have added a Media Source. Use VLC Video for multiple files; Media Source’s Loop option repeats one local file.
- The playlist ends and stops: Open VLC Video properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops when you switch scenes or hide the source: Review Visibility Behaviour. Its stop, pause, or always-play options govern hidden-source playback, not what happens at the end of the playlist.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube event, then start the encoder feed and allow Live Control Room to receive it.
- The preview appears but the broadcast is not live: YouTube’s encoder workflow separates sending the feed from going live. Check the preview, then use the Live Control Room controls to start the event.
Check rights and YouTube’s live-stream requirements
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video and audio track in the playlist. A file that plays locally is not automatically cleared for a public live broadcast. Review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and account requirements in YouTube Studio and its Help pages; this OBS setup guide does not establish whether a particular channel or media file is eligible. A playlist that repeats also does not itself establish that its content complies with YouTube’s policies.
